The New Prequel to ‘Army of the Dead’ Just Became the #1 Movie on Netflix

If there's one type of movie that never fails to be a success for Netflix, it's heist dramas.

Back in May, the streaming service released Army of the Dead, a zombie heist flick directed by Zack Snyder that was meant to be a spiritual successor to his 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead.

When the movie was released to Netflix, it quickly jumped into the number one spot, with its Walking Dead meets Ocean's Eleven premise and its star-studded cast including Dave Bautista, Theo Rossi and more.

Now, only 5 months later, the site has released a prequel to the zombie flick, titled Army of Thieves, which was directed by and stars one of the Army of the Dead cast members, Matthias Schweighöfer. And it seems this movie is going to be a similar hit, because after only two days, it has now also reached the number one slot on Netflix's list of top movies.

Per Netflix, this movie follows Schweighöfer as Dieter, a bank teller who “gets drawn into the adventure of a lifetime when a mysterious woman recruits him to join a crew of Interpol’s most wanted criminals, attempting to heist a sequence of legendary, impossible-to-crack safes across Europe.”

However, don't expect much zombie action, because the movie takes place before the zombie outbreak has had any kind of effect on Europe in their cinematic universe.

Meanwhile, the film features an entirely different ensemble cast from Army of the Dead. Alongside Schweighöfer, Army of Thieves stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan and Jonathan Cohen, among others.

One of the Army of the Dead screenwriters, Shay Hatten, returned to write the script for Army of Thieves, while Zack Snyder contributed to the story. Production was handled by Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Wesley Coller, Dan Maag and Matthias Schweighöfer.

We know what we'll be watching tonight.
