Lots of us don’t think twice about investing in high-quality skincare to keep our faces looking plump and youthful, but—as my manicurist likes to remind me—one should never neglect their precious hands. After all, not only do they do so much for us, but they’re also the true betrayers of our age. Due to a lack of fat padding, along with constant exposure to environmental factors like sun, wind and water, hands actually tend to age faster than our faces—so really, they should get just as much (if not more) pampering and care.

Thankfully, a few beauty brands are catching on, including the much buzzed-about Habelo. An innovator of handcare, Habelo is behind a first-of-its-kind, biotech-powered Activating Hand Serum ($68), which purports to meet the unique needs of skin on the hands. After hearing about it, I was intrigued—as was my 63-year-old mother who, not very slyly, plucked a fresh jar of the stuff off my nightstand to try for herself. She “needed it more,” she declared. I acquiesced, but told her she’d need to fill me in on her experience. After more than a month of using the Habelo hand serum daily, here are her honest thoughts (and before and after pictures!).

What Is the Habelo Activating Hand Serum?

Habelo

So, what makes this hand serum so special? Per the brand, it’s made with a special HAB-1 multi-peptide complex that’s meant to boost collagen and improve elasticity, as well as sea fennel extract, “a biotech-enhanced alternative to retinol” that can help brighten and replenish skin sans the irritation you would get with traditional retinol. Rounding out the formula are familiar humectants like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, niacinamide and aloe vera to heal and hydrate for firmer, plumper-looking hands.

You can also combine with Habelo’s treatment-boosting gloves ($80), a patent-pending design that’s meant to amplify the effects of the serum while protecting hands from environmental factors like sun rays. (My mom didn’t try the gloves, but I might just have to pick her up a pair.)

My Mom’s Review of the Habelo Activating Hand Serum

What She Likes

  • rich, creamy formula
  • feels nourishing and hydrating
  • delivers real results

What She Doesn't Like

  • small jar
  • pricey

Habelo

My mother keeps the jar of Habelo hand serum on the side table right next to her perch in the living room. Every day (sometimes twice a day), she slathers some on and massages the formula into her hands—without breaking eye contact with Olivia Benson, who is usually front and center on her TV.

“The serum really feels more like a hand cream,” she tells me. “It’s thick, rich and very creamy, but it absorbs beautifully. My hands feel a little slick right after application but my skin quickly drinks it all up.”

For reasons I’ll never quite understand, my mom has never used the dishwasher—she prefers to use the interior racks for extra storage (cue shrug emoji)—which means that she always washes the dishes by hand. But alas, all of that harsh soap and scrubbing leaves her hands dry and cracked. And don’t even get me started on her hand sanitizer addiction. After a little over a month of using the Habelo serum, though, the cracked, flaky bits on her hands have healed and, as she puts it, her “hands feel softer and more moisturized than ever.”

But that’s not all. “The skin on the top of my hands had felt thin and crepey, and it made the veins very visible,” she says. “Since using Habelo my skin does feel firmer and tighter, and the top of my hands and fingers look plumper, with far fewer lines. It’s definitely taken a few years off.” Just take a peek at the before and after photos yourself:

Bottom Line: Is the Habelo Activating Hand Serum Worth It?

As a loyal drugstore beauty user for all her life, my mom typically wouldn’t incorporate a $68 hand cream into her routine, but now that she’s tried Habelo, I don’t think she can live without it. Though it’s on the pricier side compared to the lotions she usually picks up at Walgreens, when you think about the science-backed, ultra-nourishing ingredients and luscious formula, not to mention the visible results, I’d say it’s practically a steal. As a bonus, a little goes a long way—my mom for sure uses a bit more than the recommended “pea-sized amount,” and, after a month, there’s still plenty left in the jar.

“I look forward to applying it every day—it’s something quick and easy I can do for myself that feels like self-care,” she declares. Guess I know what I’ll be buying her for her birthday, Christmas and Mother’s Day from now on.
