Dyson Airsmooth Heat Brush PW100 Review

I will happily commit to a ten-step skincare routine. When it comes to my hair, however, I’m much more low-maintenance. I have thick, wavy and frizzy Italian locks that reach my butt (admittedly, I’m overdue for a haircut). While I try my best to follow the Wavy Girl method to keep my strands looking their best in the morning, I’m usually an air-dry-and-go kinda gal. Part of it has to do with the fact that I’m seemingly always in a time crunch—on a practical level, I just don’t have the spare half hour. But I’m also tragically inept at using hair tools. I could never get the hang of a curling iron nor could I manage the mechanics of using a round brush with one hand and holding a dryer in the other. And after what I put my strands through with a straightening iron in high school, I’ve pretty much sworn those off. If there’s one tool I’ve always turned to, though, it’s a heat brush.

My OG Revlon One-Step was my go-to for years whenever I wanted some special occasion straightening. Once it started showing its age (and scorching my scalp), I retired it. So when the hair gurus at Dyson dropped the Airsmooth ($250) this fall, I was instantly intrigued. I’ve long coveted Dyson’s sleek and well-designed styling tools, from the groundbreaking Airwrap to the powerful Supersonic, but I just knew I wouldn’t reach for them enough in my own routine to make them worth the investment. The brand’s first-ever heat brush, though? Now that I can use.

And I’ve put it to work ever since getting my hands on one soon after it hit shelves. Between its two-in-one functionality, easy handling and shockingly swift styling results, the Dyson Airsmooth is precisely what my lazy-girl hair routine was missing. Ahead, my full review, complete with original photos.

How I Tested the Dyson Airsmooth

Since receiving it, I’ve used the heatbrush on both wet hair right out of the shower (with some heat protectant) and on dry, day-three hair to refresh my style. I considered the ease with which I could use and handle it, how effectively it went through my tangles and how quickly it dried my strands and got me to the style I desired. I judged my hair results on smoothness, straightness and lack of frizz.

What Makes the Dyson Airsmooth Special?

Dyson

At $250, the Airsmooth is definitely on the pricier end of the heat brush spectrum, but it comes with the features to justify the price tag. First up is the barrel’s unique shape. It’s curved to be slightly longer and thinner on one end, like a teardrop, which the brand says makes it easier to reach the root and achieve more volume.

Next, it boasts two types of bristles—loops and PivotFlex—both designed to prevent painful snagging and both notably lacking the ball tips you'll find on many hot brush bristles. Diffused airflow comes from the base for more comfortable scalp contact, while intelligent heat control “measures air temperature over 20 times a second to protect hair from extreme heat damage,” per the brand.

As a bonus for jet-setters, the tool comes with a bristle protector and universal voltage, making it easy to pack and use on your travels.

My Review of the Dyson Airsmooth

What I Like

  • easy to use
  • great at detangling
  • works fast
  • smooth results

What I Don't Like

  • the handle could be slimmer

Dyson

Let me start off by saying that might be the prettiest hair tool I’ve ever owned, not that we’ve come to expect anything less from Dyson. After first feasting my eyes on its minimalist pink design, I lifted it up to find it remarkably lightweight at just 1.4 pounds, as well as surprisingly balanced for a tool that’s clearly larger on one end than the other due to the thick brush barrel (turns out, this is thanks to the motor being in the handle—genius).

Since my hair is so thick and wavy, slightly damaged from dyeing and very long at the moment, it’s been getting so easily tangled lately. Even when I (aggressively) use a Wet Brush right out of the shower, it seems like new knots will form as soon as it dries. At times I literally think my mane is going to break the brush, Mia Thermopolis-stye. So imagine my shock and awe when, the first time I used it, the Airsmooth slipped through my damp strands like a hot knife through butter. Yes, there is something to these anti-snag bristles, which, though densely packed and sturdy, are able to bend and snap right back into place.

As I mentioned, I take a laid-back approach to my hair. I prioritize ease and convenience, and want to spend as little time as possible in front of the bathroom mirror doing my ‘do. That’s another reason why I’ve always appreciated the functionality of a heat brush: It’s designed to save time by detangling, drying and smoothing strands all in one go. On that front, the Airsmooth does not disappoint. In fact, it majorly exceeds my expectations. I tracked the time it took me to get my hair from the before to the after below: 13 minutes, 23 seconds.

Granted, I didn’t clip up different layers to work through them one by one; I just tackled my entire head, section by section, swooping the brush up through the underlayers. But I’d argue that taking that approach makes my smooth, shiny and totally tangle-free results in that time even more impressive.

Using and maneuvering the brush is simple. In addition to an on/off switch, there are only two buttons on the handle: one for heat, one for airflow, both of which can be toggled through to three settings (low, medium, high). You can also shut the heat off completely to allow for cool air to come through.

Now, as much as I love my air-dried waves, I don’t love the cloud of frizz that comes with them. Those wispy bits even appear after those rare times I do reach for a blowdryer. But with a little anti-frizz/heat protectant spray and my Dyson Airsmooth, I’ve finally been able to achieve a sleek finish. Notably, without having to sacrifice body and volume. Just as the brand promises, the teardrop barrel makes reaching my roots effortless—and not once do I feel even a tinge of singe on my scalp, even when the heat and airflow settings are both cranked up to high.

On dry hair, the brush does struggle a bit to detangle my ends, but it still works wonders to smooth my style and reduce the frizz around my crown. For a quick refresh, it’s perfect. I also notice that my strands stay sleek for days after I style using the Airsmooth, with far fewer knots to brush out in the mornings.

My only complaint about using the Airsmooth is that I wish the handle were a bit slimmer. While I’m surprised by how little my arm fatigues while using it, my hand does get uncomfortable after a few minutes since it doesn’t fully wrap around the handle (then again, I might just have to work on my grip strength, something I’m sure will improve the more I used this bad boy).

Bottom Line: Is the Dyson Airsmooth Worth Buying?

I have so far received compliments on my hair every single time I’ve used the Dyson Airsmooth, including from my live-in boyfriend who literally sees me 24 hours a day. To quote him, exactly: “Whoa, your hair looks great!” If that isn’t reason enough to give it a try, then I’ll reiterate how easy and fast this gadget is to use, all while doing the work of multiple tools. Let’s just say that if it could convince this sworn air-dryer who’s always running late to spend a few extra minutes on her mane in the morning, then you know it’s something special.
