A message to our ex

After a nasty breakup, some dabble in revenge dressing, others chop off a few inches of hair. Whether you’re ready to let go of the past or you just want to try something new, the break-up bob is going to rule over 2026. I chatted with experts to learn more about this rising haircut and how you can achieve it at a salon (so put down those scissors).

Meet the Experts

What Is a Break-Up Bob?

Also known as the French bob, this low-maintenance haircut is versatile and edgy for 2026. It's typically cut around the jawline or above the shoulders with beveled ends, according to Lindsay Worthen, licensed cosmetologist and educator at Ogle School. She shares, "It’s an outward reflection of internal renewal—a way to shed the past and start a new chapter."

There’s historical precedent for celebs chopping off their hair after ending a relationship—from Selena Gomez (when she and Biebs split in 2018) to Taylor Swift (after Calvin Harris in 2016). But this specific bob has gained traction, as mentioned, after TSITP showed its main character with her new breakup bob post split. “It’s easy to style and suits any hair type and face shape. Plus, this bob just represents a clean slate, it’s sharp and unapologetic,” adds Stanley Nolan, master cosmetologist and educator at Ogle School.

How to Ask a Stylist for a Break-Up Bob

Come prepared with photos of your desired haircut, especially ones that closely resemble your face shape and/or hair type. According to the experts, you can also ask your stylist for a blunt or texturized bob that’s soft, lived-in and bouncy.

Can All Hair Types Rock a Break-Up Bob?

According to the experts, the break-up bob can be customizable for all hair types, especially those with thin or fine hair to create the illusion of fuller locks. Overall, the goal is to add a ton of movement and subtle layers throughout for a bouncy ‘do. Note: A stylist’s cutting technique might differ based on your hair type and length.

How to Style a Break-Up Bob

Whether you want it silky smooth, voluminous or you simply want to show off your texture, this haircut is pretty versatile. If you want to recreate Keke Palmer’s red carpet ready hair, Worthen recommends using a round brush and blow dryer (or hot air brush) to create maximum volume. Don’t forget to add mousse or a volumizing product to maintain fullness, as well as hairspray to set your look and prevent any flyaways.

But if you’re searching for a more sleek look like Sydney Sweeney, you can use a flat iron and denman brush to straighten each section. The hair tool can also be great for creating a soft bend for a la flipped hair effect

And if you have wavy or curly hair, just apply your styling product of choice (cream, oil or spray) and simply let it air-dry to enhance your pattern. “Texture is key with the break-up bob, making it feel more lived-in and expressive,” says Nolan. “Adding curls or waves can really take this cut to the next level and add dimension to your cut.”

So say goodbye to your ex and hello to a brand new haircut (minus all the baggage).
