ICYMI, Y2K-era body sprays are back like they never left. But similar to low-rise jeans and excessive layering, modern day iterations of these trends aren’t like the ones we remember. Gone are the days of tweens spritzing themselves with Victoria’s Secret’s Love Spell. Instead, they’re headed to Sephora and picking up the latest mists to hit the shelves (or their TikTok FYP’s). Think: viral mists from Phlur, intense aromatics from Kayali and clean beauty spritzes from Ellis Brooklyn. But the brand leading the charge of this body spray resurgence? Sol de Janeiro.

Founded in 2015, Sol de Janeiro sought out to bring the lively spirit of Brazil to consumers, but perfume mists weren’t a part of their initial roadmap. It all started with their now-viral Brazilian Bum Bum cream, promising to firm and tighten skin while leaving a warm pistachio aroma in its place, which quickly rose to becoming the top product at Sephora after its debut at the retailer in 2017.

By 2024, Sol de Janeiro was listed as the top-selling brand at Sephora, replacing Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty in the no. 1 spot, even after their expansion to Ulta retailers the same year. Whether it’s Gen-Z’s or TikTok’s influence—most likely both—Sol de Janeiro has solidified their name in beauty as one of the brands to watch for. Not only are the scents head-turning and compliment collectors to boot, they’re inspired by Brazil’s colorful culture, meant to transport you to the streets and beaches of Rio with every spritz and spray. But with a fragrance repertoire as lengthy as theirs, it can be hard to pinpoint the scent right for you. Which is why I took on the challenge of testing and trying the top Sol de Janeiro scents (hard job, I know). Here, I review and rank 10 of the brand’s best-selling body sprays, ranging from bakery-inspired gourmands to discotheque-ready florals.

10. Cheirosa 76

Sol de Janeiro

At the bottom of the list (for no standout reason other than preference) is Cheirosa 76, a warm floral bound to attract you some attention on a night out. Upon first spritz, those notes of black current and amber are heavy, but as it dries down, that musky patchouli note begins to shine through. It makes for a great mist when you don’t want something too powerful, but still want an attention grabbing fragrance. It’s sensual, it’s musky, and I find that this one truly lingers.

9. Cheirosa 39

Sol de Janeiro

If you’re coco-nuts for coconut, then you’ll love Cheirosa 39. Described as a tropical gourmand, I dub this one as the ultimate vacation fragrance. The coconut and sandalwood notes truly dominate here, and to me, it smells like more of a fresh and clean coconut rather than a warm and sweet coconut as its description lists. But toss this one in your suitcase or beach bag, and it will, for sure, be one of the highlights of your vacay.

  • Top Notes: Coconut Cream
  • Dry Notes: Creamy Sandalwood, Toasted Praline
  • Middle Notes: Warm Vanilla, Tropical Orchid

8. Cheirosa 59

Sol de Janeiro

Cheirosa 59 felt more mature than the brand’s other offerings. On first impression, the fragrance came off very powdery. The velvet plum and vanilla orchid notes are mild, but the sugared violet and sandalwood take over to create a soft, relaxing aroma. If you’re not into strong gourmands or fruity florals, but still want to try out a Sol de Janeiro fragrance mist for yourself, I suggest this one. Additionally, if you’re the type of person who incorporates a spritz or two of perfume during your nightly routine, this one is a great contender.

  • Top Notes: Velvet Plum, Sugared Violet
  • Dry Notes: Sheer Sandalwood, Fresh Vetiver
  • Middle Notes: Vanilla Orchid, Whipped Amber

7. Sundays in Rio

Sol de Janeiro

New to Sol de Janeiro’s fragrance index is Sundays in Rio, which is described as a floral gourmand. As much as I love this one, the vanilla note was a little too soft here. I’m personally fond of its light muskiness and the subtle pepper note you get during the dry down, but I also had to reapply it more times than I would like. Other than subtle lasting power, I think it’s a great pickup if you want a softer fragrance this fall or looking for a neutral mist to layer with other fragrances.

  • Dry Notes: Amber Musk, Upcycled Orcanox
  • Middle Notes: Warm Vanilla, Orris Concrete, Champaca Pure Jungle Essence

6. Cheirosa 71

Sol de Janeiro

I like to think of this fragrance as Cheirosa 62’s much sweeter counterpart. With yummy notes of caramelized vanilla, white chocolate and tonka bean, it’s a true gourmand through-and-through. In all honesty, it nearly smells like kettle corn, which I’m sure can be chalked up to the added note of sea salt. The toasted macadamia note is also very prominent, adding a similar nutty aroma like Cheirosa 62. But eventually, it all balances out to become a warm, sweet and inviting fragrance you’ll want to sniff for hours on end.

  • Top Notes: Caramelized Vanilla, Sea Salt
  • Middle Notes: Toasted Macadamia Nut, White Chocolate
  • Dry Notes: Tonka Bean, Coconut Blossom

5. Cheirosa 68

Sol de Janeiro

A fruity-floral with notes of Brazilian jasmine, pink dragonfruit and sheer vanilla, Cheirosa 68 is a personal favorite that I gravitate to often. Not too overpowering but also not too subtle, this just right perfume mist is perfect for everyday wear. I find this to be another one of the brand’s mature offerings, with this one earning many comparisons to concentrated eau de parfums. I don’t get much of the lychee note while wearing it, but it’s still great to sport on days when I want a fragrance on the lighter side. But don’t be fooled, this mist still has great longevity.

  • Top Notes: Pink Dragonfruit, Lychee Essence
  • Middle Notes: Brazilian Jasmine, Ocean Air, Hibiscus
  • Dry Notes: Sheer Vanilla, Sun Musk

4. Cheirosa 48

Sol de Janeiro

Before the guava hype of this summer, Sol de Janeiro launched this tropical, summer-y goodness in a bottle in June of 2024. It has a very fresh and fruity scent profile, with notes of juicy guava nectar, punchy lemon twist and soft vanilla cloud. I wish I got more whiffs of the guava after it dries down, but the distinguishable musk note makes up for it. After hours of weartime, it starts to lean more fruity-floral to my nose, but it’s nothing to be upset about. Quickly, it changes from fun and flirty to sophisticated and alluring.

  • Top Notes: Guava Nectar, Coconut Water
  • Middle Notes: Sunlit Orchid, Lemon Twist, Wild Orris
  • Dry Notes: Pink Musk, Vanilla Cloud

One thing to know about me: I despise solar scents. I’ve never seen the appeal of smelling like a bottle of your favorite SPF—until now. Despite prior feelings about bright solar fragrances, I love Rio Radiance. It has the strongest lasting power out of the fragrance mists and had great projection hours after application. While the Tuberorse and Ylang Ylang are the stars of this body spray, the leite de coco (coconut milk) and vanilla notes keep it balanced and warm.

Screw a beach day, I want to wear it all year long. And for the true sunscreen lovers out there, it’s also available in a SPF 50 body mist. Well scented *and* well protected!

2. Cheirosa 40

Sol de Janeiro

If you like warm florals with a creamy sweetness, Cheirosa 40 is your gal. Its amber-y fragrance is packaged in a bright magenta bottle, with scent notes of plum, vanilla and jasmine. When I think of warm and cozy scents from Sol de Janeiro, Cheirosa 40 is one of the first to come to mind. It’s a versatile scent you can wear in both the summer and winter, and it deserves all its praise and more. As someone who’s also tried its Bom Dia cream companion, they’re both worthy pickups. Fragrance tip for you: layer them together for an even stronger olfactory experience.

1. Cheirosa 62

Sol de Janeiro

If this scent seems familiar, that’s because it’s the fragrance behind the cult-classic Brazilian Bum Bum cream (no lie, one sells every four seconds). In fact, the signature Cheirosa 62 scent only became a fragrance mist after many fans of the cream urged the brand to create a complementing spray. Crafted to be undeniably irresistible, it has a nutty characteristic due the pistachio and almond notes, a warm sweetness from the salted caramel, which is all rounded out by the touches of florals and woods. After years of rave reviews, the brand now offers the scent in many forms—a shower gel, an aluminum-free deodorant, an eau de parfum (which I treasure dearly) and more. It’s truly that impressive.

  • Top Notes: Pistachio, Almond
  • Middle Notes: Heliotrope, Jasmine Petals
  • Dry Notes: Vanilla, Salted Caramel, Sandalwood
