Top 10 Chicago Spas by Neighborhood
Most of the time, hanging out in a bathrobe all day is considered kind of sad. But on a spa day, it’s considered not only appropriate but classy. (Consider that reason number 361 why you deserve a spa day!) From an eco-friendly gem to a posh hotel retreat, one of these top ten spots should do.
1. GOOSE ISLAND: ALLYU SPA
With its dramatic white draperies and warm uplighting, Allyu is the kind of place we’re tempted to loiter. So it’s a good thing that loitering, lingering and general lounging are encouraged for all spa guests. After your hot stone massage or chakra balancing, curl up in an armchair with an herbal tea and take it all in.

2. RIVER NORTH: CHUAN SPA AT THE LANGHAM
Every treatment at the Langham’s Chuan Spa begins with a bathing ritual that progresses from herbal sauna to salt stone sauna to aromatherapy shower to chamomile steam room. The series boasts a range of benefits, like loosening muscles, opening the respiratory system and easing skin ailments. On the downside, it might take some of the glow off your normal morning shower-loofah routine.

3. WEST LOOP: COWSHED
Soho House’s well-appointed interiors are a far cry from an English barn, but that’s where the in-house spa gets its name. The original was established in an actual Somerset cowshed, which explains the galvanized buckets of warm, soapy water at the pedicure chairs. China pots of English tea keep the overall ambience refined, of course, as do facial treatments featuring SkinCeuticals products.

4. MAGNIFICENT MILE: THE PENINSULA SPA
You’d have to try really hard to not be pampered at the Peninsula. From the opulent lap pool (its floor-to-ceiling views are worth Instagramming) to the facial treatments featuring Biologique Recherche (the holy grail of French skin care), everything is a little extra. We suggest you take it as a challenge and book not one but two treatments for a half-day retreat.

5. LINCOLN SQUARE: LENA ROSE
If you’ve ever read the ingredients label on your lotion and felt slightly freaked out, head to this green boutique spa. For hair removal, they do sugaring. Their nail services use only 5- to 10-free polishes (meaning they’re free of harsh chemicals). And their signature service is a farm-to-table facial that combines all-natural body butters, clays and herbs chosen specifically for your complexion.

6. GOLD COAST: WALDORF ASTORIA SPA
Until teleportation is possible, we’ll take a shortcut to Turkey through the Waldorf Astoria Spa. Their signature cleanse includes a coffee, olive stone and lemon scrub, followed by a rhassoul clay wrap, for a full hammam experience in 120 minutes. Afterward, we like to relax in the elegant lounge, but you’re also welcome to use the state-of-the-art fitness center.

7. LINCOLN PARK: KOHLER WATERS SPA
Trust Kohler (maker of sinks, baths and showers) to know a thing or two about hydrotherapy. The company has long operated water-loving spas in the suburbs and recently opened its first Chicago location in Lincoln Park. Spend a day unwinding in the cool plunge or hydromassage pool, only to emerge for a Digital Detox wrap when your fingers prune.
2358 N. Lincoln Ave.; 312 245-9129 or kohlerwatersspalincolnpark.com
8. UKRAINIAN VILLAGE: RUBY ROOM
When your Co-Star horoscope isn’t quite cutting it, head here for an intuitive reading. Depending on your preferences, healers might read your energy or aura or refer to numerology to tell you what’s really going on with your roommate. Afterward, you can get a traditional massage or wax service and pick up a smudge to clear the energy in your home.
1743-45 W. Division St.; 773-235-2323 or rubyroom.com
9. SUBURBS: KING SPA
Everyone needs to try this Korean spa at least once. Separate men’s and women’s facilities include hot and cold pools plus massage services. The coed space is a veritable playground of charcoal sauna, amethyst room, infrared sauna and then some. Most of all, it earns points as the only spa we know where there’s a food court serving bibimbap.

10. RIVER WEST: AIRE
Nothing against your Epsom salts, but you just haven’t bathed until you’ve visited this romantic retreat inspired by ancient Roman, Greek and Ottoman bath houses. In between dips in the thermal baths—or even in a vat of red wine—you can indulge in a massage or scrub with argan oil, honey or Himalayan salt.
