Best under-desk treadmill: A collage with a woman on a treadmill
Dasha Burobina for PureWow

We already know that our modern sedentary lifestyles (i.e., sitting in front of our computer for hours on end) aren't good for us. And while it’s not an option for most of us to give up our desk jobs, it might be a good idea to invest in an under-desk treadmill that will help get you moving mid-day. New research shows that even five minutes of walking for every 30 minutes spent on our butts can offset the negative effects of sitting all day, every day, by reducing blood sugar spikes (which can reduce the risk of diabetes). It can also help to prevent spikes in blood pressure. With advances in modern exercise equipment, getting an under-desk treadmill for your home or office setup is affordable, portable, non-disruptive and, need we say again, excellent for your health.

Read on for what to look for in one of these machines and find out how we made our selections for the best under-desk treadmills available right now.

The Best Under-Desk Treadmills at a Glance

What Is an Under-Desk Treadmill?

Gone are the days of the 1,000-pound, bigger-than-a-house treadmills with a panel of buttons that resembles a NASA spaceship. Under-desk treadmills are small, sleek machines that you can slide underneath your standing workspace to get those steps in while you type, Zoom or scroll (some of them even go fast enough to jog on).

What to Look for in an Under-Desk Treadmill

There are several things you'll want to keep an eye out for when choosing a quality version of this fitness apparatus, which we've outlined for you below.

  • Size: You want your under-desk treadmill to be as small as possible while still giving you the power you need. All of our selections have the item measurements included, as well as their maximum speeds. Some will be more compact than others, but all of our selections will be suitable for a working environment and are relatively portable and storable.
  • Speed: If you want to use your under-desk treadmill specifically for walking, you won’t need one that goes much higher than three miles per hour (mph). If you want to get a run in now and then, look for one that goes over six mph.
  • Additional features: All of our selections include digital displays to help you keep track of your distance, time and speed, while all except for the Kotia treadmill ($159) and the LifeSpan ($1,899) come with remote controls. We’ve even found the best under-desk treadmill on an incline for an extra workout.

Where to Buy Under-Desk Treadmills

You can find under-desk treadmills at specialty stores, such as GoPlus, as well as at many box retailers, including Target, Walmart and Amazon.

If you’re as eager to get walking as we are, check out the best under-desk treadmills out there below.

Best Under-Desk Walking Treadmill

1. Sunny Health & Fitness Walkstation Under-Desk Treadmill

Sunny Health & Fitness

  • Machine Type: manual
  • Machine Weight: 55.1 pounds
  • Dimensions: 50 inches long by 21.5 inches wide by 6.5 inches high
  • Weight Capacity: 220 pounds
  • Max Speed: 3.75 mph
  • Standout Features: remote control, auto shut-off, large stats monitor
  • Cons: lower walking speed

The Sunny Health & Fitness walkstation comes at a great value for the money. Not only is it relatively sleek and lightweight, but it has a large, built-in digital monitor at the top that keeps track of your time, speed, distance, calories burned and steps. The remote control can change your speed as you go, getting you up to nearly four miles per hour—that’s faster than you’d want to go if you need to talk in a meeting, but otherwise delivers a rapid walking pace and a great light cardio workout. It’ll also automatically turn itself off when you’ve been off the treadmill with no activity for ten minutes.

Best Under-Desk Running Treadmill

2. GoPlus 2-in-1 Under-Desk Treadmill

Goplus

  • Machine Type: electric
  • Machine Weight: 69.5 pounds
  • Dimensions: 49 inches long by 27 inches wide by 42 inches high
  • Weight Capacity: 265 pounds
  • Max Speed: 7.5 mph
  • Standout Features: wide running deck, fold-down handles, phone riser
  • Cons: speed is limited when handlebars are down

The GoPlus has one of the shortest, widest decks available for an under-desk treadmill, making it great for running—with the extra width, it’s less your feet will rub at the edge of the belt as your speed increases. With the handlebar folded down, it only goes up to two-and-a-half mph (which is perfectly suitable for walking), but when the handles are up, it can get up to seven-and-a-half mph—a pretty decent pace for most of us. (You will want to note that when the handles are up, this won’t be able to tuck right under your desk.) You can also put your phone on the streamlined riser for a Netflix binge to distract you from your workout, or even connect the built-in Bluetooth speakers for music or podcast listening. “I have been using [this] under-desk treadmill for almost eight months and it's made a huge difference in my health,” says PureWow Commerce Editor Olivia Dubyak. “Not only have I upped my step-count to around 15,000 steps a day, my energy levels have improved and my lower back pain is basically gone.”

Best Folding Under-Desk Treadmill

3. WalkingPad S1 Under-Desk Treadmill

Walkingpad

  • Machine Type: manual/automatic
  • Machine Weight: 55 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎56.8 inches long by 20.3 inches wide by 4.9 inches high
  • Weight Capacity: 220 pounds
  • Max Speed: 2.5 mph
  • Standout Features: folds in half for storage, pressure sensor for speed
  • Cons: lower walking speed

Lots of under-desk treadmills call themselves “folding” treadmills, and technically, they are—their handrails can be folded down so you can use them under your desk (and for easier storage). But the WalkingPad *literally* folds in half, like an old-school flip phone, giving you even more storage options. While the company has prioritized design (this thing is basically a marvel of treadmill technology), it didn’t sacrifice quality: the wear-resistant, anti-slip belt has multi-layer noise reduction built in, as well as a pressure sensor, so you can easily switch between manual mode (walk at your own pace) and automatic mode, which allows you to change the speed based on where you’re standing—walk near the front of the machine for acceleration, the middle for medium speed and at the tail of the treadmill for deceleration.

Best Under-Desk Treadmill with Incline

4. Wildken Folding Under-Desk Treadmill

Wildken

  • Machine Type: corded electric
  • Machine Weight: 48 pounds
  • Dimensions: 37.8 inches long by 26.4 inches wide by 40.2 inches high
  • Weight Capacity: 240 pounds
  • Max Speed: 5 mph
  • Special Features: 15 percent incline, phone stand, fold-down handlebars, remote control
  • Cons: fixed incline

If you’re looking for a more challenging under-desk workout, give the Wildken treadmill a try. It has a built-in 15 percent incline, which will allow you to burn more calories and get a better cardiovascular workout than you would with a flat walking treadmill. On average, walking at three mph up a 15-percent incline is going to burn about 140 more calories per hour according to Week&. The Wildken goes up to five mph, so be ready to feel the burn! The easy-to-read digital display, remote control and folding handlebars are great additions to this lean, mean calf-strengthening machine, too: The only drawback is that the incline is fixed, so unless you’re committed to that kind of workout every time you turn it on, you might want to opt for a different machine.

Best Small Treadmill for Under-Desk

5. Egofit Walker Pro M1 Under-Desk Treadmill

$379

  • Machine Type: corded electric
  • Machine Weight: 55 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎38.39 inches long by 21.85 inches wide by 6.89 inches high
  • Weight Capacity: 220 pounds
  • Max Speed: 3.1 mph
  • Special Features: ultra-compact, five percent incline, maneuverable wheels, remote control
  • Cons: no handrails

At just 38 inches long and less than 22 inches wide, the Egofit is among the smallest under-desk treadmills on the market. While its 55-pound weight doesn't make it the lightest, it is easy enough for one person to move alone. The slight, five percent incline means this machine is small-but-mighty, too: That’s enough of a lift to feel it in your glutes, but not so steep of an incline that you’ll be burnt out before you barely get started. Basically? The Egofit is an amazing option if you’re short on space but big on staying active.

Best Under-Desk Manual Treadmill

6. Kotia Manual Under-Desk Treadmill

Kotia

  • Machine Type: manual
  • Machine Weight: 57 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎49 inches long by 23 inches wide by 50 inches high
  • Weight Capacity: 220 pounds
  • Special Features: foldable, transportation wheels, ten-degree incline
  • cons: handlebars don't fold down

Most treadmills use an electric motor to move the running belt, but manual treadmills move in response to your steps, meaning you’ll be putting your body’s strength to good work with the Kotia. Some major perks of this manual machine are the price (it's just $159 on sale, which is roughly half of the price of other models), the ability to set it up anywhere you have the space, since an outlet isn’t necessary and the extra exertion you'll be getting from its ten-degree incline. One downside, however, is that manual treadmills don’t generally come with easy-folding handlebars, so you'll have to either set it up so that they are positioned behind your standing desk or make it more of a next-to-your-desk kinda' treadmill.

Best Portable Under-Desk Treadmill

7. Ssphpplie Walking Pad Under-Desk Treadmill

Ssphpplie

  • Machine Type: manual
  • Machine Weight: 44 pounds
  • Dimensions: 50 inches long by 20.9 inches wide by 4.6 inches high
  • Weight Capacity: 265 pounds
  • Max Speed: 3.8 mph
  • Special Features: lightweight, slim profile, rolling wheels, big display
  • Cons: no handrails

At just 44 pounds, this Ssphpplie under-desk treadmill is among the lightest we found. Combine that with its two rolling wheels and ultra-slim profile, and you’ve got yourself the best portable under-desk treadmill your hard-earned dollars can buy. It has a nice, big bright digital display to keep track of your stats and a remote control for easy speed adjustment. Shoppers also say it's quiet.

Most Quiet Under-Desk Treadmill

8. GoYouth 2-in-1 Under-Desk Treadmill

Goyouth

  • Machine Type: electric
  • Machine Weight: 50.7 pounds
  • Dimensions: 50.59 inches long by 22.44 inches wide by 5.51 inches high
  • Weight Capacity: 220 pounds
  • Max Speed: 6 mph
  • Special Features: low-noise horsepower, shock reduction, Bluetooth speaker, remote control
  • Cons:

Whether you’re working from home or in an office, you'll want to make sure your under-desk treadmill isn’t disruptive to roommates, neighbors or your Zoom colleagues. Keeping your walking speed slow is a way to keep your breathing regulated and eliminate foot noise, but you also want a machine that runs as quietly as possible. The GoYouth treadmill is powered by a low-noise 2.25 horsepower motor. Under-desk treadmills generally have a noise level between about 45 to 70 decibels (dB), and GoYouth’s sits a reasonable 55 dB (for comparison, a normal speaking voice registers at about 60 dB).It also has noise-reducing and shock-absorbing properties in the base, and its sturdy steel frame won’t creak and squeak on you. And when the work day is through, you can crank up the speed to run, since it's built for both walking and jogging.

Best Treadmill Desk

9. Lifespan TR5000 Classic Treadmill Desk

LifeSpan

  • Machine Type: electric
  • Machine Weight: 179 pounds
  • Dimensions: 68.5 inches long by 38 to 48 inches wide by 33 to 52.5 inches high,
  • Weight Capacity: 400 pounds
  • Max Speed: 4 mph
  • Special Features: reversible walking deck, stat tracking, adjustable height
  • Cons: pricey, heavy

If you’ve got a bigger budget and want to save yourself some time, you can get a great-quality standing desk and under-desk treadmill all in one package. We love this set from LifeSpan, the standing desk for which has been called the best in the biz more than once. As for the treadmill, it has a super-sturdy 400-pound weight capacity, a short and wide deck and a quiet motor that make it a top pick. Of course, it comes with the price tag to go with the quality: just the treadmill alone will cost you $2,099. While the addition of the desk would normally take your total up to $2,300, it's currently on sale for $1,899. And hey, you—and your health—are worth it.
