If you’re a NYC resident who wants to escape the concrete jungle and enjoy a peaceful upstate retreat, but does not own a car, I’ve good news for you: It’s totally doable. There are multiple public transportation options that will bring you to the beautiful Hudson Valley where a weekend of gallery hopping, wine tasting and hiking awaits. How to get around without a vehicle once you’ve reached your destination is a different story, though, which is why I have compiled a list of the most centrally located Hudson Valley Airbnbs in walkable towns that you can access without a car. Dust off your walking shoes and get ready to book.

34 Cozy and Romantic Winter Weekend Getaways from NYC

How to Get to the Hudson Valley Without a Car

The Metro-North Line: Beacon, Coldspring, Peekskill

The Metro-North is a railroad network consisting of three lines—Harlem, Hudson and New Haven—all of which can be accessed from Grand Central Station. When it comes to exploring the Hudson Valley without a car, the Hudson will be your line of choice. The Hudson line stops in popular towns such as Coldspring, Peekskill and Beacon. Its final stop is in Poughkeepsie.

The Amtrak Line: Hudson, Rhinebeck, Poughkeepsie

To access Amtrak’s Empire Service Route from NYC, you will need to catch a train from Moynihan Train Hall—a transit hub directly across from Penn Station. The Amtrak route, while more costly than the Metro-North, does provide direct access to several Hudson Valley destinations, including the town of Hudson itself, Rhinecliff (i.e., the Rhinebeck station), and Poughkeepsie.

Bus Services (Trailways): Woodstock, New Paltz

New Paltz, Hunter, Rosendale, Woodstock, Saugerties and Catskill are among the Hudson Valley destinations that can be accessed by the Trailways bus service from Port Authority in NYC. It’s a very cost-effective and efficient way to get upstate without a car, and I speak from experience. (My sister lives in New Paltz and I can’t say enough good things about the Trailways bus service. The buses run frequently, the tickets are affordable, the seats are spacious and the WiFi is great.)
