As an avid traveler, I own my fair share of luggage. I’m talking all shapes and sizes (though carry-ons tend to be my most utilized). However, when I found myself packing for my destination wedding—two weeks in Mexico—I realized I was wholly unprepared in the luggage department. I needed something really big, really lightweight and really easy to manage. Enter Away’s ‘The Trunk’ suitcase ($435).

The Trunk is Away’s biggest suitcase size so I was a bit nervous that it would weigh a ton or be unwieldy while navigating crowds in the New York or Puerto Vallarta airports. Fortunately, my apprehension was totally unfounded. Not only is The Trunk a really great suitcase, but I received so many compliments from friends and strangers alike about how it looks.

So what made The Trunk by Away so great? Here, my honest review (with original photos!).

My Review of ‘The Trunk’ by Away

Away

First of all, those compliments I received on my new Away? Yeah, they were all about the appearance. It’s difficult not to notice The Trunk—it is quite big after all—but I made it all the more noticeable by opting for a bold colorway. I chose the limited-edition Supernova Silver (think: shiny silver with sparkles). And while Supernova Silver is no longer available, there are a number of eye-catching colors I’d recommend, like Palm Green, Hot Pink, Splash Blue and Sorbet Orange. (Or, of course, you can keep your eye out for future limited-edition options.) Besides the accolades, selecting a bold color has the added bonus of being able to spot my suitcase instantly as it comes down the ramp of the luggage carousel at baggage claim.

But looks aren’t everything. I own a number of luggage pieces that look sleek but feel low-quality or don’t maneuver well. Lucky for me, I didn’t have those problems with my Away.

For a suitcase of this size, The Trunk is incredibly lightweight and easy to maneuver with its 360-degree smooth-gliding wheels. I was able to zip around the airport quickly using only the trolley handle (which has two height settings). There are also plenty of side handles to make the suitcase easy to lift when necessary.

The Trunk is made of a polycarbonate shell that keeps things lightweight, but adds to the quality of the bag. I’ve used suitcases before that have cheap plastic outsides, but this isn’t one of those. The shell is tough enough to withstand dents or dings—and after my international trip, I didn’t notice any scuffing on the exterior.

In terms of what fits inside, let me just say there is a lot of room. After worrying about being able to transport all of my clothes (and shoes) to Mexico, I found that I had more than enough space for everything. The only thing I didn’t feel comfortable packing in the suitcase was my wedding suit, which I carried separately. But everything else went in without a problem.

The interior features a double-buckle compression pad, mesh pockets (including one hanging pocket) and it of course comes with the laundry bag.

I wouldn't say there are any major cons other than the size of the suitcase means I have to be very conscious of the weight of my packed belongings. Though the Trunk itself is light at only 12.3 pounds, I found that I was over the 50-pound checked bag limit quite quickly. After I realized the packed suitcase was up to 70+ pounds, I had to pay the fee for an overweight bag (I didn't mind terribly since it was my wedding). Just something to keep in mind!

Bottom Line: Is the Away Trunk Worth It?

I do understand the price tag may seem high, but I think the high quality and ease of use in this case definitely makes it worth the cost. Plus, I’ll be wheeling my Supernova around the world for years to come.
