*Warning: Spoilers ahead*

After last night’s episode of This Is Us, the showrunner is opening about that major Kevin (Justin Hartley) twist and what it means for the beloved character.

In a brand-new interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Elizabeth Berger discussed the latest episode, which teased a potential new love interest for Kevin.

The installment, titled “A Hell of a Week: Part Two,” showed Kevin reuniting with Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge) for her mother’s funeral. In a bizarre turn of events, he slept with Kate’s best friend, Madison (Caitlin Thompson), later that night.

Although it came as a surprise to, well, everyone, Berger warned fans about the implications, especially since Kevin still has feelings for Sophie.

“I think it’s fair to say that [Kevin] is in regret mode,” she said. “He was reeling from being thrown into this incredibly emotional, intense period of time with Sophie. And then it came to an end and he happened to walk into a house where somebody feeling equally vulnerable was waiting for him, and this happened. I don’t think it was in his plans. And there is this very complicated component that she is very close friends with his sister that he’s now going to have to deal with.”

Last season, we learned that Kevin has a son in a flash-forward, though we don’t know the identity of the mother. When asked if Madison could be that person, Berger revealed that anything is possible, even though it will disappoint Sophie fans.

“Look, we made people like Miguel, we can do anything!” she added. “Obviously, the love story between Kevin and Sophie is so expansive and so deep and spans all these decades that were the mother to be anybody else but Sophie, people will have strong feelings about it. But we’re just going to have to see where this one unfolds.”

Poor Sophie has no idea what she’s in for. This Is Us returns to NBC on Tuesday, February 11.
