Everything You Need to Know Before ‘The OA’ Returns to Netflix This Weekend

After two-plus years, season two of The OA is hitting Netflix tomorrow, March 22. Since the show blew our minds the first time around, we’re not taking any chances. So, we compiled a list of everything you need to know ahead of tomorrow’s premiere. (You know, as a refresher.)

The First Season

Season one of the Netflix series introduces viewers to Prairie (Brit Marling) or “The OA,” a woman who reappears after being MIA for seven years. The catch? She was formerly blind and mysteriously regained her sight during her absence.

The Episodes

Just like the first one, the second installment will consist of eight chapters, so clear your weekend plans.

The Delay

Since season one premiered in 2016, many fans were surprised that the second season took more than two years to develop. Marling previously addressed the criticism in a now-deleted Instagram post and reminded viewers that she plays two lead roles: actress and writer.

“Because I’m both the lead actor and a lead writer we can’t leap-frog the production,” she explained. “We have to write all eight chapters up front before we can begin shooting the first chapter.”

The Returning Cast

Much to our delight, Marling (Prairie), Jason Isaacs (Hap), Riz Ahmed (Elias), Patrick Gibson (Steve) and Emory Cohen (Homer) will all reprise their roles.

The New Cast

While season two will feature a slew of new characters, the biggest addition is Kingsley Ben-Adir, who will play a detective who crosses paths with Prairie. (You may recognize him as Dr. Marcus Summer from Vera.)

The Plot

Don’t get too focused on the (spoiler alert!) school shooting that happened in the season one finale, because this brand-new teaser introduces an alternate universe. That’s right, the clip sets up a world that suggests a second timeline, considering milestone events—like Barack Obama’s presidency—are seemingly erased from history. The rest is up for interpretation.

The Future Of The Show

Back in July, Cindy Holland—the vice president of original series at Netflix—revealed The OA is designed to play out in a “five-season arc.”

Guess it’s only the beginning.
