Taylor Swift’s ‘Time’ 100 Gala Gown Was Part Fairy Tale, Part Jellyfish

Taylor Swift floated like a beautiful butterfly and stung like a bee jellyfish on the red carpet last night.

The 29-year-old Grammy-winner made a rare public appearance at the 2019 Time 100 Gala, where she was honored for her contributions to music and pop-culture. Prior to hitting the carpet, however, Swift shared a sneak-peek at her dusty pink and yellow hand-pleated J. Mendel gown on Instagram.

In the snap, Swift posed in a beautiful little garden that appeared to be a respite in the heart of New York City. Between the frothy chiffon gown and its ornate floral embroidery, her dewy makeup and the wisteria, the whole look was very Secret Garden meets a Rodarte ad—except for her bizarre bolero.

The custom arm-embellishment, also from J. Mendel creative director Gilles Mendel, was a tad more under the sea than garden party. I might even call it jellyfish-esque, thanks to the fabric that just so happens to look like it’s moving under water. And, sure, there aren’t any tentacles, but who needs ’em when there’s a school of lion’s mane jellyfish right there on T-Swift’s arms? (Trust me—Google them.) But I digress.

The “Delicate” singer completed her look with Lorraine Schwartz rings, earrings and a floral headband. She also wore Chloe Gosselin’s pale yellow Tori strappy heels, embellished with silver hanging chains to add a bit of edge to the romantic ensemble.

Her makeup was classic Swift love story inspired, with lots of highlighter, iridescent rose gold eye shadow, long wispy lashes and a nude rose pout. The singer’s updo featured face-framing tendrils, a braid and texturized bangs.

Together, it formed a cohesive aesthetic that feels very on-brand for Swift…save for her jellyfriends.
