Congrats—you successfully KonMaried your entire wardrobe, making sure to say thank you to each and every item that you tossed (well, the first three ripped T-shirts anyway... it got a little cumbersome after that). And now you're embracing emotional minimalism by employing the KonMarkle method (that's KonMari and Markle, aka getting rid of all the toxic people in your life who don't "spark joy"). But there's one thing left on your to-do list for peace of mind that's super important—namely doing a safety check.
It sounds dull but it's one of the most crucial home-maintenance chores you can do—and you should be doing it monthly, say experts. And why not think of it in the KonMari framework as minimalizing dangers (we want to spark joy, not fires after all)?
Here's what to do: Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors (check the manual for how to do this) and make sure that your fire extinguisher is in working order. (It's easier than it sounds, promise.)
In the interest of full disclosure, we admit that we definitely don't do this every month. But now that our wardrobes (and therefore, our lives) are totally streamlined thanks to Marie Kondo, what better time than the present to tackle this household task?
