Queen Letizia of Spain has captured my attention on multiple occasions for her ability to look professional in whatever she wears. So, you can imagine my surprise when I saw the 52-year-old monarch made a denim dress appear royally chic.

This week, the royal attended the Retina Eco Awards in Madrid, where she presided over the ceremony. Queen Letizia wore a stunning A-line piece by Carolina Herrera ($995)—from afar, it looked like a midi-length evening gown. But upon closer inspection, it became clear that the dress is made from dark wash denim. (Yes, you read that right.)

I know what you’re thinking: Is a denim dress really appropriate for an awards show? Well, this particular event is known for having a more casual dress code than similar U.S.-based events (like the Oscars). Plus, she didn’t look underdressed despite the casual fabric.
Perhaps it’s the modest neckline, which perfectly frames Queen Letizia’s collar bone. Or maybe it’s the belted waist that creates a flattering silhouette. Somehow, she didn’t look too country or too casual. Instead, she appeared poised and elegant.
