No surprise here: When it comes to height, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are on the receiving end of some very good genes. Their mother, Kate Middleton, is 5’9” tall while their dad, Prince William, is 6’3”. (In fact, the Prince of Wales is currently the tallest member of the Windsor family, just narrowly edging out his brother, Prince Harry, who is said to be 6’2”.) But that’s exactly what made me do a double take as George, Charlotte and Louis all stepped out today: When the heck did they get so tall?

Pass me the royal measuring stick

First, a bit about today’s occasion: The British royal family—King Charles and Queen Camilla included—are set to play a major part this week in the events commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day on May 8, which honors the anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe in 1945. Prince William, Kate Middleton and their three children were on hand for today’s military procession, but also a rare Buckingham Palace balcony appearance to watch a military flypast—their presence and participation speaking to the significance of such a historic day.

But it was specifically their arrival that caught my eye: I noticed Princess Charlotte first as she strode to her seat walking beside her great aunt, Duchess Sophie. Charlotte, who just turned 10, was easily up to Sophie’s shoulders. (For reference, Sophie is said to be 5’5”.)

Still, that’s when my eyes traveled over to Prince George, 11, who at one point was walking next to his mom, Kate, and just a few paces ahead of his sister. It might be the angle, but George appears to be shoulder height with his mom, who—I repeat—is 5’9”. (This isn’t the first time George’s height was the subject of discussion. After he attended an Aston Villa match in Paris with William in mid-April, the internet was abuzz about how tall he was walking next to his dad.)

Middleton genes aside, it’s common knowledge that height is a trait that runs strong on the Spencer side. Princess Diana was 5’10” tall, which meant she was of equal height to her husband, then-Prince Charles. (There are many claims that she never wore heels higher than two inches as a result.)
More than anything, it’s astounding to see George, Charlotte and Louis looking so grown up.
