#TBT to that super-sweet post shared by Meghan Markle on Easter Sunday earlier this year: The Duchess of Sussex is pictured along what appears to be her Montecito driveway, cut off by a trail of adorable ducklings who couldn’t help but follow their mother across the road.
Prince Harry & Meghan Markle’s Easter Duck Emergency Revealed—and Oprah Saved the Day
Duck, duck—dial a friend
A serendipitous Easter moment? According to Oprah Winfrey, it turns out it was anything but. During an interview on Kelly Ripa’s podcast, Let’s Talk Off-Camera, Winfrey—who happens to be Meghan and Harry’s neighbor in the Southern California neighborhood—provided a bit more context about the ducks and how it all went a bit wrong.
“I got a call from Harry, Prince Harry, on Easter Sunday,” she reveals. “He says, ‘Sorry to bother you, O, but we have a duck problem here.’” (Insert Winfrey recounting this in her best attempt at British accent, used to impersonate the prince.)
She goes on: “A duck had come into their yard and laid their eggs and had these chicks. And he said, ‘Our pond is a stream, we don’t have a pond, so can we bring the ducks over to your pond?’”

Winfrey told the Sussexes yes, but also let them know that she had company in town—namely, her BFF Gayle King’s grandchildren were visiting for the holiday weekend. This led Winfrey to ask Harry and Meghan to hold tight for a bit. “I said, ‘Wait until I can get the kids to come down to the pond so they can see you put the ducks in the pond.’” Per Winfrey, on the podcast, Harry replied, “‘No, we’re coming right away, we’re coming over!’”
That’s when things went a bit haywire: “As he opens the door, the mama duck flies out. And he’s got all the baby ducks in a box. We’re chasing the mama duck who is in the front yard and has flown to the other side. We’ve got her ducks. Harry’s running after, Meghan gets out, she’s running after, chasing the mom and trying to get her to come back to her ducks,” Winfrey shares.

All in all, the trio spent about half an hour chasing after the mother duck, according to Winfrey. “We have video. It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen,” she laughs.
We’d certainly call that an Easter to remember. But also, Ripa’s reaction to Winfrey’s story on the podcast also mirrors our own: “The ducks also hit the jackpot. They’re like, ‘Wait a minute, we show up at Prince Harry’s house and now we’re at Oprah’s!’ Excuse me. That duck knew what it was doing when it laid its eggs,” Ripa laughs.
Took the words right out of our mouth.
