Matt Damon tried to keep his mouth shut about the potential rekindled romance between Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, but his silence didn’t last long.
The 50-year-old actor appeared on yesterday morning’s episode of the Today show, where he chatted with hosts Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb about J.Lo and Affleck. (ICYMI: The pair were spotted together in Los Angeles, followed by a trip to Montana.)
Damon started off tight-lipped, saying, “There’s not enough liquor in the world for you to get me to say something about that.”
The actor went on to explain that he’s not very well informed, since he had no idea the duo had been hanging out. “I just heard you guys. I was sitting here waiting to come on TV,” he added. “This is the first time I’ve heard about it.”
Despite his lack of knowledge, Damon wished Affleck and Lopez all the best. “It’s a fascinating story,” he said. And then added, “I hope it’s true. I love them both. I hope it’s true. That would be awesome.”
Need a refresher? Lopez and Affleck were engaged back in 2002, around the same time they co-starred in Jersey Girl and Gigli. They never made it down the aisle, since they postponed the wedding and then announced their split in 2004.
Damon doesn’t have any major ties to the couple—well, other than the fact that he’s been friends with Affleck since they were kids. Still, as someone who has 15+ years of marriage under his belt, we trust his opinion.
