Madonna Just Celebrated Her Birthday in Italy—But the Giant Labubu Cake Stole the Show

When it comes to birthday celebrations, a few essentials come to mind: candles, balloons… and obviously, cake. And if we’re talking about Madonna’s latest birthday bash, we need to talk about that cake.

The “Material Girl” singer turned 67 on August 16 and marked the occasion with a dreamy getaway to Italy. She shared a recap of the festivities in a Reel posted to Instagram on Monday, August 18, featuring her boyfriend, 28-year-old former soccer player Akeem Morris and daughters Mercy, 19, and Lourdes, 28.

“My dream for many years has been to watch the Palio horse race in Sienna that takes place on my birthday, August 16, since 1482,” Madonna wrote in the caption. “A truly sacred ritual to witness,” she added. “Dreams do come true! Happy Birthday to me!!!”

The Reel shows the group living it up, including shots dancing with locals, cheering at the Palio horse race, antique shopping, driving through the Italian countryside and watching an epic fireworks display.

But the real scene-stealer? That giant pink Labubu cake near the end of the video, complete with the words “Happy birthday Madudu” written on it. And I can't take my eyes off it, perhaps because its like 100x the size of a normal Labubu.

If you’re wondering what a Labubu even is, here’s the scoop: Labubu is the standout character from a fantasy universe created by artist Kasing Lung. Born in Hong Kong and raised in the Netherlands, Lung built a magical world inspired by Nordic mythology, filled with good and mischievous creatures known as The Monsters.

Labubu—a pointy-eared, serrated-toothed little monster—is one of the most beloved. He looks chaotic but has a heart of gold (and kind of a tendency to mess things up while trying to help). In 2019, Lung partnered with PopMart to launch Labubu figurines and plushies, with many sold in mystery “blind boxes,” where you don’t know which one you’ve scored until you open it.

From horse races to high fashion cakes, Madonna really knows how to throw a birthday party.
