Jonathan Van Ness Just Officiated a Wedding for Pride Month & It Was Beyond Fabulous

Fact: If Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness threw an envelope opening party, we’d be there. So when the 32-year-old Fab Five member and LGBTQ+ advocate officiated one lucky couple’s wedding in Seattle, you better believe were there with bells on.

Van Ness partnered with Elysian Brewing to celebrate Pride Month and give partners Megan and Haden the wedding of their dreams. PureWow exclusively spoke with Van Ness before the ceremony and, yeah, it got emotional.

“[They’re] such a special couple and the venue is so beautiful. You can just really feel the energy of the room. I’m so excited to be a part of this special day,” Van Ness explained.

This wasn’t the first wedding Van Ness has officiated (remember Doug the Pug’s parents?), but it was the first LGBTQ+ wedding he’s overseen. So how did Van Ness prepare for the big day?

“It’s kind of about just staying present. If I think about it too much I’ll freak out and stutter a lot. Stick to your bullet points and don’t overthink it. The moment will happen,” he shared.

And it did. Megan and Haden’s industrial chic nuptials at Elysian Capitol Hill Brewery were outfitted in all the rainbow regalia thanks to Seattle Pride, Seattle Chocolate and F*ck Yeah Weddings. But most radiant of all was Megan and Haden’s love.

As the newlyweds told PureWow, they met on Megan’s first day as a transfer student at the University of South Carolina. She walked into a 300-person lecture late and the moment Haden spotted her, he knew their romance was “was inevitable.” Megan agreed: “If it didn’t happen that way, it would have happened another way.”

Fittingly, the wedding date fell on the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling of the divisive case of a Colorado bakery that refused to make a same-sex couple’s wedding cake.

The plaintiffs in the case, Charlie Craig and David Mullins, attended the wedding as an act of solidarity. The event also featured five stunning cakes from LGBTQ+ friendly bakeries Bells Pastries, Butter & Scotch, Tres Lecheria, Cupcake Royale and Honey Comb.

All in all, the wedding exceeded Megan and Haden’s expectations, elicited many “Yaass queens!” from the audience and made this editor cry. As Van Ness put it, “I just feel in awe of people who are in love. I love love.” So do we, JVN.

Congratulations, Megan and Haden.
