Once upon a time, a 30-something named Carrie Bradshaw wrote about sex and relationships in New York City. Now, following the 20th anniversary of Sex and the City, author and creator Candice Bushnell is reframing the series and asking the question: Is There Still Sex in the City?
The new aptly titled series will examine love, dating and sex after 50 (aka around the age Carrie and the girls would be today). The show is based on Bushnell’s forthcoming book of the same name and the TV rights were just snagged by Paramount TV and Anonymous Content in a fierce bidding war.
A follow-up to the iconic HBO series, Is There Still Sex in the City takes place in New York City’s Upper East Side and Greenwich Village. As Sex and the City explored the ups and downs of dating in New York City, its new iteration will explore what happens post happily ever after, when children and divorce and death become the norm. The series will shed light on the issues women over 50 face, like the pressure to look ageless and “have it all.”
Bushnell reflected on her inspiration for the project in a statement, saying, “It didn’t used to be this way. At one time, 50-something meant the beginning of retirement—working less, spending more time on your hobbies, with your friends, who, like you, were sliding into a more leisurely lifestyle.”
