1. How Many Awards/honors Are There?

There are several different types—like the Companion of Honour, Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and Knight or Dame. (See more here.)

Excluding the Bravery Award, which can be awarded after someone’s death, all of the honors recognize individuals who are actively involved in bettering the community.

2. Who Can Be Nominated?

Just about anyone, as long as you’re able to explain why he/she should be recognized. According to the official website, the purpose is to honor people who have 1) “made achievements in public life” or 2) “committed themselves to serving and helping Britain.”

Although the government accepts submissions for both U.K. and international individuals, the application process slightly varies based on location.

3. How Do I Nominate Someone?

Simply visit the official website and select the type of nomination you’d like to make from the table of contents. The site will direct you to the corresponding page, which has a link to the application.

4. What Happens After Someone Is Nominated?

Every applicant will receive some sort of acknowledgement, though it may take 12 to 18 months to get a response. The nominees will be screened by various government departments before getting reviewed by the honors committee to ensure suitability.

May the odds be ever in your favor.
