How chic

When you think of astronauts gearing up for space, chances are your brain goes straight to those big, puffy suits—think Michelin Man meets fishbowl helmet. So when actual photos surfaced of Katy Perry, Gayle King and Lauren Sánchez stepping out in custom designer astronaut suits, my jaw? Fully dropped.

In case you missed it, the trio is headed to space today aboard a Blue Origin rocket (yep, Jeff Bezos’s space company). Joining them on the mission are NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, astronaut and bioastronautics researcher Amanda Nguyen and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn. Not only is it a major flex, but this flight also marks a historic first for Blue Origin—their first-ever all-female crew.

Now let’s talk about these looks, because they are not your standard-issue NASA uniforms. The suits were designed by Monse, the fashion brand led by Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, and were created in collaboration with Sánchez herself. She started working with the designers back in late 2024 to ensure the suits were both functional and flattering.

“Usually, you know, these suits are made for a man,” Sánchez told The New York Times, noting that they’re typically just altered to fit women afterward. Not this time.

The final result? Sleek, flame-resistant stretch neoprene suits, designed with both utility and style in mind. They even include customizable details like calf zippers to create a flared-leg silhouette.

As for Gayle King, she announced her involvement back in February and made it clear she wasn’t jumping into this lightly. She ran the decision by her kids, Kirby and Will, and longtime bestie Oprah Winfrey first.

“Once Kirby and Will and Oprah was fine with it, I was fine,” King said on CBS Mornings. She added, “I thought Oprah would say no, no. She said, ‘I think if you don’t do it, when they all come back and you had the opportunity to do it, you will be kicking yourself.’ She’s right.”

Honestly? I love to see women literally launching to new heights—and doing it in style.
