#TBT to the royal wedding of last summer

It was the royally-adjacent wedding of last season: The Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor, married Olivia Henson—now the Duchess of Westminster—in June 2024 at Chester Cathedral with Prince William on hand and looking dapper as an usher. (Princess Eugenie also turned up for the pair’s special day.)

Now, even happier news: Hugh and Olivia are expecting their first baby—and it’s highly likely that Prince William will be named as a godfather, given their long-term friendship.

The pair revealed their announcement via an official statement: “The Duke and Duchess of Westminster are very pleased to share that the Duchess is expecting a baby in the summer. The couple are delighted with the news and are very much looking forward to starting a family together,” according to People.

As for William’s potential new role, it makes sense: Hugh’s family has always been close to the royals with Hugh’s late father, Gerald, having a long-term friendship with King Charles. To honor that relationship, Hugh is a godson of the king while Hugh’s mother, Natalia, is Prince William’s godmother. (The late Princess Diana was also chosen by Gerald and Natalia to be godmother to their second daughter, Lady Edwina Grosvenor.)

There’s more—given their familial ties, the Duke of Westminster has a close friendship with both Prince William and Prince Harry. He was chosen to be godfather to their first-born children (Prince George and Prince Archie). Bottom line: Hugh’s royal ties run deep.

It also is why it made headlines last year when Prince Harry opted out of his wedding due to what, at the time, was referred to as an “understanding between friends.” (Read: It may have been awkward for William and Harry to attend together, given their recent rift.)

Regardless, we’re thrilled for the Duke and Duchess of Westminster and hope this means there are lots of royal playdates in their future.
