It's tried and true

There’s a reason for the phrase, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”—and when it comes to royal interactions with kids, it totally applies. Royals like Kate Middleton, Prince William, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have all embraced a simple but powerful move when connecting with little ones. And now, Duchess Sophie is putting it to good use once again.

During her surprise visit to the Royal Cornwall Show with Prince William on June 6, 2025, the Duchess of Edinburgh stopped by the Food and Farming Pavilion in Wadebridge, England—a celebration of Cornwall’s finest artisan food and drink producers. While mingling with guests, she was photographed doing something subtle but meaningful: crouching down to speak to a child at eye level.

It may not seem like much, but this thoughtful gesture is actually a well-known trick used to help children feel more seen, heard and comfortable. By physically lowering herself to the child’s level, Duchess Sophie reduces any sense of authority or dominance, which helps foster open and relaxed communication.

And this isn’t the first time we’ve seen Sophie use it. Just last month, during a visit to the Royal School for the Blind Charity, a video shared by Buckingham Palace showed her engaging warmly with students—and yep, she was right down at their level again, chatting and smiling with ease.

Prince William has used the same approach too. Around the holidays, he was photographed handing out toys to children and crouching to speak with them directly during a festive event.

It’s a go-to move—particularly for Princess Catherine—and honestly, we love to see it.
