We Want to Give Dan a Hug After His Emotional Speech in the ‘Roseanne’ Finale

We can’t help but feel abandoned when a TV show airs its final episode of the season, but this week’s Roseanne season finale is making us a different kind of emotional.

Here’s what you need to know: In the episode, titled “Knee Deep,” Dan (John Goodman) is faced with a financial dilemma when the Conners’ basement floods due to a storm (think ankle-deep water). Oh, and did we mention he doesn’t have home insurance? Go figure.

When he realizes he has to pay for the damage and Roseanne’s (Roseanne Barr) knee surgery, Dan dives into an emotional monologue that is making the internet extremely emotional.

He says, “I spent my whole life hanging on by my fingertips, telling everyone not to worry, that everything was going to be OK, because that’s my job. Well, now I can’t promise that anymore, so yeah, it makes me sick but I’m going to do whatever I’ve got to do to take care of my family because I’m old, I’m tired, and I’m not sure how much longer I can hold on.” We’ll never let go, Jack Dan.

After the show, the real-life Roseanne took to Twitter to congratulate her on-screen husband, writing, “John Goodman is a great actor.” Some fans responded with words of praise, saying, “John Goodman’s scene last night in the flooded basement moved us to tears. So realistic.” Others confirmed we aren’t the only ones who got weirdly emotional: “Watching the finale of #Roseanne and balling my eyes out.”

Great actor, indeed.
