It might be a little premature, but Buckingham Palace and the rest of the U.K. are already prepping the celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign.
On Thursday, the official Royal Family Instagram account announced that in honor of Her Majesty’s major milestone, the country will be adding a new holiday to the calendar in 2022. “A four-day Bank Holiday weekend to mark The Queen’s Platinum (70th) Jubilee has been announced for June 2022,” part of the caption read. “Further plans to mark the occasion will be announced in due course.”
According to Buckingham Palace, the four-day holiday weekend will allow for a variety of events that the government promises will “mix the best of British ceremonial splendor and pageantry with cutting edge artistic and technological displays.” The celebrations will also consist of the distribution of Jubilee medals to public service workers.
We’re not exactly surprised that the U.K. is planning for the 94-year-old monarch’s Platinum Jubilee 18 months in advance, considering it’s the first time any British monarch has reached this historic milestone.
“Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee will be a truly historic moment—and one that deserves a celebration to remember,” Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said in a press release. “We can all look forward to a special, four-day Jubilee weekend when we will put on a spectacular, once-in-a-generation show that mixes the best of British ceremonial splendor with cutting edge art and technology. It will bring the entire nation and the Commonwealth together in a fitting tribute to Her Majesty’s reign.”
So, while Americans won’t be blessed with a four-day weekend in June for Her Majesty, we’re still looking forward to seeing how the U.K. rings in this impressive accomplishment.
