Wrong Actress’s Name Was Called at BAFTAs for Best Supporting Actress in Totally Understandable Mix-Up

In an interview with Variety, BAFTAs producer Nick Bullen explained what happened. He noted that there were two sign language interpreters—one American, and one British—plus one translator. Somehow, the winner wasn’t translated correctly.

“It was just a very unfortunate translation issue,” he told the outlet. “[Troy Kotsur, the presenter] was signing in [American Sign Language]. And on stage we had someone with him signing in [British Sign Language]. And on the floor was someone with a mic translating the sign language to speech. And it was a very unfortunate mistranslation that played out.”

Bullen continued, “It was just one of those–Kerry Condon and Carey Mulligan. Somewhere in the signing translation, pardon the pun, something was lost in translation, which was incredibly unfortunate. But I thought Carey Mulligan was incredibly gracious and handled it brilliantly. She understood it was one of those very unfortunate moments that no one could have predicted.”

On the bright side, this will probably never happen again.
