Angelina Jolie has always been candid about her health struggles and family life, and now the Oscar-winning actress opened up about her Bell’s palsy diagnosis and split from Brad Pitt in a telling new interview in the August issue of Vanity Fair.
In the article, Jolie reveals that last year she developed both hypertension (aka high blood pressure) and Bell’s palsy, a neurological condition that temporarily caused one side of her face to droop.
While the exact cause of Bell’s palsy is unknown, Jolie did allude to the fact that she has been under an immense amount of stress since her split from Brad Pitt.
“I can't tell if it's menopause or if it's just been the year I've had,” she said in the interview, also revealing she's also noticed more gray hairs and dryer skin recently. “Sometimes women in families put themselves last until it manifests itself in their own health.”
Bell's palsy is a rare condition that happens when a person’s facial nerves are damaged. While most people recover fully without any treatment, the actress and mother-of-six said that she turned to acupuncture to help her get better.
Jolie has previously spoken openly about her health issues, including undergoing a double mastectomy in 2013. Speaking to the magazine, Jolie said: “I actually feel more of a woman because I feel like I’m being smart about my choices, and I’m putting my family first, and I’m in charge of my life and my health. I think that’s what makes a woman complete.”
