You may spend all day pinning holiday cookie recipes, but when you get home, it’s all you can do to boil a pot of pasta without getting claustrophobic. Don’t despair: These hacks will help you turn even the tiniest kitchen into an Ina Garten-worthy cooking station.
In terms of palette, that is. White and other fair hues reflect the most light, visually opening up the room. That doesn’t mean you have to give up all color, though: Just keep it confined to a few accents.
Closed-door cabinets might be standard, but they can feel bulky in a snug space. Open shelves instantly add more breathing room and put your most-used items within easy reach—just make sure to keep an eye on dust, and store your ugly Tupperware somewhere out of sight.
If you really don’t want to go the open route (which is fair), swap your opaque doors for transparent (or even frosted) ones and you’ll still get the benefits of the added depth.
Sensing a trend? If you don’t have much built-in storage, a few well-placed fixtures can hold a lot of gear without taking up much square footage. Plus, it totally gives off a chefly vibe (even if you’ve ordered pizza three times this week).
Short on counter space? Boom—you just added some.
Likewise, getting rid of that clunky knife block frees up even more surface area. A wall-mounted strip takes up almost zero space.
Double your cabinet space (and keep things organized, to boot) with under-shelf baskets.
A few things on the counter are inevitable: a coffee maker, a toaster. But don’t get in the habit of storing too many jars and appliances there. The clearer the countertops, the more welcoming the space will feel when you decide to whip something up.
Cramped spaces are breeding grounds for shadowy nooks where the overhead light can’t reach. Install LED strip lights underneath cabinets to ensure you’ll never have to chop onions in the dark.
