Background: I’ve been obsessed with round, nestable vanities since the first time I saw a ’60s Italian dressing table at an estate sale. Later, I learned it was Luigi Massoni’s Dilly Dally vanity—the holy grail of compact glamour. A polished wood drum with a flip-top mirror and a stool that docks neatly inside, it was designed for small apartments but has since become a collector’s item. Today, the originals list north of $10,000 on 1stDibs. Gorgeous, yes. Practical for a New York rental? If I sold a kidney.

So when TikTok kept serving me Urban Outfitters’ take on the silhouette, I measured the sliver of space by my bedroom door, hoping it would scratch that vintage itch without the auction-house price. Here’s why I’m obsessed.

Design Background

The Jane is a clear descendant of Massoni’s Dilly Dally, but it manages to feel like a smart translation instead of a knockoff. The silhouette is replicated to a tee: cylindrical base, a flip-top mirror with soft-close hinges and a stool that disappears completely underneath so the whole thing condenses into one tidy drum. That architectural efficiency was what made the Dilly Dally so groundbreaking in the first place, and Urban Outfitters managed to preserve it.

Yet, where the Italian originals were done in glossy lacquer and leather, the Jane softens the look with a suede-like upholstery that’s gentler to live with and easier to clean. I went with the powder-blue Sky option, but there are a slew of others—Oxblood, Dark Green, Pink Floral, Leopard, or Blue Multi. I’ll admit, I was originally smitten with the Pink Floral, but it was too busy for my space. And the striped Blue Multi? It’s basically begging to live in a Nancy Meyers beach house, right next to a bowl of lemons. The walnut-toned mirror rim also adds an organic note, grounding the upholstery and making it feel more like furniture than novelty.

Functionality

Flip the lid and you get a felt-lined storage well that’s deeper than it looks. I keep a rattan tray in the center with my daily lineup—foundation, concealer, SPF, brow gel, lipstick—so everything lifts out in one move. Around the edge sit compacts and balms, while brushes stand upright near the hinge so the bristles don’t splay. There’s even room along the front for my Dyson round-brush attachment, plus setting spray, clips and deodorant. The upholstery is soft and luxe to the touch, but it’s also a bit delicate, so you’ll want to be careful about scratching the felt lining (vacuum attachments can be especially unforgiving).

Then, on TikTok’s advice, I added a $13 strip of stick-on globe bulbs around the mirror—peel, stick, plug—and the difference is immediate: shadow-free, studio-level lighting for liner and shade matching. And a few other tiny tweaks that TikTok recommends: cable-clipping the bulb cord behind the mirror, adding felt bumpers so the lid closes softly and keeping a thin silicone heat mat tucked along the edge to protect the lining and stop hot tools from rolling into my blush.

One thing worth flagging, however, is that many reviewers said their mirrors spontaneously shattered after months of use. I haven’t had that issue—likely because I always keep mine open thanks to the globe lights—but it’s worth noting if you tend to keep the lid closed.

Size and Comfort

Most importantly, the proportions are a win for small spaces. At 25 by 23.6 by 31 inches, it’s compact without veering into dollhouse territory. Plus, the stool—just under 20 inches wide with a cushioned polyfiber seat—impressed me: it’s comfortable enough that I’ve ended up lingering here, doing makeup in the morning and tapping out emails at night. The rounded base also means no bruised shins in a narrow room, and in my case, it slid perfectly into the 23-inch corner by my bedroom door (a space that rejected even a skinny bookshelf). When the stool is docked, the footprint condenses into a neat cylinder, the lid clears the wall when opened, and the mirror stays steady thanks to the chain catch.

The Bottom Line

What We Like

  • Iconic design lineage inspired by Massoni’s Dilly Dally
  • Compact size (25" x 23.6" x 31") fits small corners
  • Comfortable stool with cushioned polyfiber seat
  • Arrives fully assembled with white glove delivery
  • Wide range of finishes, from powder-blue Sky to bold Leopard

What We Don't Like

  • Upholstery and felt lining are delicate and prone to scratches
  • Some reviewers report mirror glass shattering over time

Urban Outfitters

This vanity is one of the few viral buys that actually deserves the hype. It channels the brilliance of Massoni’s Dilly Dally—glamorous but efficient—and brings it down to a scale (and price point) that works in a small apartment. The mixed materials (acacia wood, mango wood, MDF, cotton upholstery) keep it sturdy without making it precious, though you do need to treat the lid gently.

To that end, it isn’t perfect. The interior storage is roomy enough for daily essentials but not a full beauty arsenal, so you’ll need to edit down or store overflow elsewhere. The fabric and felt lining are delicate, which means you have to be careful with vacuums or anything that might snag. And while I haven’t had an issue, many reviewers report that the mirror has spontaneously shattered after months of use—a risk I’ve likely avoided by keeping mine flipped open for the globe lights and closing it softly.

Still, if you want a design classic reimagined in colors from powder-blue Sky to bold Leopard, with a footprint that fits into the tiniest New York corner, this is the rare piece that makes both TikTok and design buffs proud.
