The $13 Back-to-School Staple You'll Buy Now and Use All Year Long

Tell trash to scram

You’ve secured the backpack, the lunch box, the exact two-pocket folders your kid’s school requires (paper, not plastic; pronged, in navy, red and yellow only). But there’s one thing missing from your back-to-school shopping list that definitely needs to be on hand: Glad ForceFlex trash bags—limited edition Sesame Street packaging featuring Oscar the Grouch, no less.

Why? As a home editor and parent, I’ve learned that trash bags are something you don’t notice…until they tear open and leave spaghetti and banana peels on your floor. I’ve tested all kinds of brands, and so I always look to Glad ForceFlex for its flexibility and durability (especially since my family’s guilty of overpacking our kitchen bin before finally taking out the trash). The bags also have two layers of leak protection, which is helpful when a half-full yogurt or the remains of the volcano science project are tossed out.

They also feature Gain scent technology, which traps and neutralizes odors, so you don't have to smell last night's salmon sheet pan dinner as you pour milk into your cereal the next morning.

And then there's the Sesame Street collaboration. It's more than cute packaging; it can also serve as the springboard to a nice parenting hack.

The new school year means settling into new routines, and it’s also an opportunity to establish new chores and responsibilities—without making them feel like a chore. Ask your kids to find Oscar the Grouch on the box and (using your grouchiest, gravelliest voice) tell that trash to “scram!” This can be a fun way to engage them in grabbing a new bag and helping you take out the trash. (My kids love imitating Oscar the Grouch, and while they may need some help adjusting the bag onto the bin, the stretchy, ForceFlex design makes it relatively easy.) You could even challenge them to see if, together, you can take out the garbage before you can finish singing Oscar’s famous “I Love Trash.”

This gives you a whole new reason to make a Target run (as if you needed another excuse). You can find the Oscar the Grouch Glad packs on the endcap displays at Target stores nationwide, starting at $13 per package.
