What Is a Bed-in-a-Bag Set?

For the uninitiated, a bed-in-a-bag set is an all-encompassing collection of bedding that comes complete with everything from the comforter that will sit at the top of the pile to the fitted sheets you'll stretch out beneath them. Not to be confused with a basic comforter set, which usually includes a comfortable and one or two pillows shams, these sets are essential like complete outfits for your bed, since you'll also find bedding accessories, such as pillowcases, decorative pillows and more inside. (Typically, the larger the bed size, the more items included in the set). Best of all? No one will be any wiser that it all came together in one handily pre-assembled bag.

As for the options, you can channel your love for the Italian coast with an elaborate set ($66) that has fancy shams and an embroidered pattern or go for something far more minimalist and understated, like this Wayfair Basics bed-in-a-bag set ($34). Sizes, meanwhile, range from twin sets kids will love to California Kings for your primary suit.

Here are a few of the elements you might find in your set.

  • A comforter or a duvet cover: These are filled with synthetic or down materials to help keep you warm and toasty at night. The main difference between the two is that a comforter’s cover is not removable whereas a duvet’s cover can be taken off for washing. Comforters are also usually slightly larger than duvet covers.
  • A fitted sheet: As you're probably aware, this is the sheet that stretches over the mattress's perimeter, with one corner tucked into each of its four sides.
  • Flat sheet: Also known as a top sheet, this one goes over the fitted sheet and under the comforter or duvet. These are particularly nice for warmer evenings when you want to kick the duvet or comforter off but still feel some warmth.
  • Pillowcases: Pillows are placed inside these to keep them clean and protected. They can also add some pizazz to your decor.
  • Pillow sham: These go over pillows but are designed to be more decorative than regular pillowcases. As Casper points out, the opening is also typically different, with a zipper rather than a slit-style closure.
  • Bed skirt: This goes under the mattress and drapes around the perimeter of the bed, hiding the open space beneath.
  • Decorative pillows: Decorative pillows are meant to be placed on the bed after making it in the morning and removed before you go to bed at night. As the name implies, they're purely decorative.

Where to Buy a Bed-in-a-Bag Set

Bed-in-a-bag sets are available virtually anywhere you can buy bedding online. This includes popular retailers such as Amazon, Target and Wayfair, as well as department stores like Macy’s and specialty linen companies, like Brooklinen.

How We Chose the Best Bed-in-a-Bag Sets

To choose the best bed-in-a-bag sets, we looked at each one's included items and materials, as well as its special features, like extra-deep pockets to fit thicker mattresses. All of the items we selected are generally well-reviewed by customers or come from reputable brands with a good track record in the linens space.

Can't pick between them all? We've compiled a few tips below to help you make the right selection for your home. Once the hard part of picking is over, all you'll need to do is open your bed-in-a-bag set up, lay it out and enjoy every last second snuggled up in it before the alarm goes off and you hit that snooze button…twice.

  • Consider the style: While everything in a bed-in-a-bag will be coordinated, you’ll want to opt for one that fits with your room's decor, from the color scheme to the design aesthetic.
  • Read the label: Don’t assume that the items you need for your bed will be included in your chosen set. If it only has a single pillow case and you have two pillows, for example, you’ll want to see if you can add a second one to your cart. Conversely, you'll want to read the label to ensure your set doesn’t have extra items you won’t use. If you have a lowered bed, for example, you might not need a collection that comes with a bed skirt.
  • Check out the thread count: It’s important to check out your set's thread count. This is a rough indicator of softness, with higher thread counts generally corresponding to softer-feeling bedding (anything over 200 will generally be pretty nice).
  • Check out the materials: The materials your linens are made from will affect their tendency to trap heat, be hypoallergenic, machine-washable and more, so it's important to take a peek at them before buying.
  • Look at the stitchwork: A pro tip? Check that the stitching on the comforter is in a design versus in a straight line. Since stitching holds the filling in place, straight lines can result in a lumpy look.
  •  Pocket depth: If you have a thicker mattress, you’ll want to look at the depth measurements of the fitted sheet to ensure it will fit properly.

Best Large Bed-in-a-Bag Set

1. Small World Home Annalise Bed-in-a-Bag Set

Small World Home

  • Why We Love It: won't wrinkle easily, durable, embroidered print
  • What We Don’t Love: limited bed sizes available, too thin for winter
  • Material: polyester
  • Size: nine-piece set
  • Fits: queen bed
  • What’s Included: comforter, two shams, two pillowcases, flat sheet, fitted sheet, two decorative pillows

Why settle for a simple comforter-and-sheet combo when you can get a whopping nine pieces with which to adorn your bed? That’s the case with this set, which includes not only your basics, but two decorative pillows and shams, too. It's made of polyester, which means it will be easy to clean and won't wrinkle up 24/7, but may trap heat against your body—luckily, it's super lightweight.

Best Small Bed-in-a-Bag Set

2. Levtex Viviana Botanical Bed-in-a-Bag Set

Letex

  • Why We Love It: reversible, watercolor-inspired, oversized fit, pre-washed
  • What We Don’t Love: no sheets included, low thread count
  • Material: cotton
  • Size: two- to three-piece set
  • Fits: twin/twin XL, full/queen and king/California king beds
  • What’s Included: comforter, one-to-two pillow shams

Quench your thirst for wanderlust with this bed-in-a-bag set that has us dreaming of Parisian gardens. Sure, it's on the smaller side, with just a comforter and a sham (or two), but if you're not the type to bother with decorative pillows, this watercolor-inspired option will do just fine. It's 100 percent cotton and comes pre-washed, so there'll be no worry of ruining it the first time you throw it in the machine. The thread count's on the lower side at 126, however, so note that you may want some extra-soft sheets to use beneath it.

10. Amazon Basics Medallion Bed-in-a-Bag Set

Amazon Basics

You can choose from a wide range of colors, styles and patterns in this bold set that’s soft, light and fluffy. That's not to say it won't keep you warm, however: Rather, its polyester construction means it may actually trap heat. At less than $50, it probably won't last you for the long haul—Amazon shoppers say its bright colors do fade over time—but it will look great in a guest room that doesn't get as much heavy use. With Green by OEKO-Tex certification to ensure the textiles are manufactured with safety and environmental concerns in mind, you may want to grab a few for the kids’ rooms, too.
