Let the wrap battle commence

When it comes to fries or chicken sandwiches, fast food connoisseurs tend to have non-negotiable favorites. Those same folks were likely psyched about the return of McDonald’s Snack Wraps, which just returned to menus after a nine-year hiatus. Of course, as a food editor, I tasted and reviewed them myself, and they tasted like straight-up nostalgia. But it got me thinking—are they really the best fast food chicken wraps out there?

To find out, I tasted options from seven chains and reviewed them. Below, you’ll find my original photos and honest overall ranking.

The Best Fast Food Desserts You Can Order Right Now, Ranked by a Food Editor

7. Sonic

  • What’s On It: chicken tender, lettuce, cheddar cheese, tomatoes and your choice of sauce
  • Options: Cheesy Baja, Honey Chipotle
  • Price: $2

It’s the cheapest fast food snack wrap out there, since it’s on Sonic’s FUN.99 menu. However, it wasn’t my favorite of the lot. The chicken was very crispy but could’ve been more flavorful. The tortilla was very soft, pliable and tender, and didn’t turn soggy. On the Cheesy Baja version, I found the cheese sauce to be overpoweringly rich and artificial tasting. I could’ve also done without the tomatoes because they added an excessive amount of moisture.

6. Popeye’s

  • What’s On It: hand-breaded, Cajun-seasoned chicken tender, lettuce, shredded cheese and barrel-cured pickle chips, wrapped in a flour tortilla
  • Options: classic (mayo), honey mustard, spicy
  • Price: $4

Overall, the tortillas seemed too big for the chicken inside, making the Popeye’s chicken wraps feel less substantial. The chicken tenders were also inconsistently sized, so some were notably larger than others. However, I loved how soft and tender the wrap was, and the chicken was impeccably crisp without being dry (not to mention as succulent as ever). I also loved that Popeye’s put pickles on the wraps; their pickles are consistently crunchy and very acidic, which is my kind of pickle. In terms of the varieties, the spicy option was my favorite. (I saw that coming, since the chain’s chicken sandwich won my ranking.)

5. Wendy’s

  • What’s On It: herb-marinated chicken breast, shredded cheddar cheese, romaine lettuce and ranch sauce on a flour tortilla
  • Price: $6

I was pleasantly impressed with this pick from Wendy’s, which I’d never ordered until now. It was a full-size wrap more than a Snack Wrap equivalent and came with grilled chicken instead of fried. All the other expected components were there, though. The meat was very black pepper-y and thoroughly seasoned. Texturally, the chicken reminded me of the precooked Tyson grilled chicken strips my mom used to buy, but it wasn’t dry at all. The lettuce was crisp and, my favorite, cut into bite-size pieces for easy noshing. I also appreciated that the ranch dressing was evenly distributed and the cheese was mostly melted.

4. Taco Bell

  • What’s On It: one crispy chicken strip, purple cabbage, lettuce, pico de gallo, shredded cheddar cheese and your choice of sauce
  • Options: avocado ranch, spicy ranchero
  • Price: $3

It may not be precisely marketed as fast food chicken wraps, but I’d venture to say that Taco Bell’s new crispy chicken tacos are essentially just that. Considering how much I enjoyed the chain’s chicken nuggets, which are marinated in the same zingy, slightly spicy jalapeño buttermilk and coated in the same tortilla chip breading as the chicken strips, it’s no surprise that I found them impressive. They were thick, juicy, crunchy with visible tortilla chip crumbs in the breading (although the ratio was meatier than nuggets) and well-seasoned without being too salty. They were more zesty than spicy, and very hefty. My favorite taco was the avocado version; the sauce was bright and limey and paired nicely with the produce for a crispy fish taco vibe.

3. Burger King

  • What’s On It: white meat breast fillet, tomato, lettuce and sauce of your choice on a flour tortilla
  • Options: Royal (zesty ranch-like sauce), honey mustard, Fiery (spicy)
  • Price: $3

These BK Royal Crispy Wraps came with tomato instead of cheese and a halved chicken patty instead of a whole tender, unlike most of their competitors. They didn’t have as much breading or crunch as others on this list, but they were still crisp and freshly fried. The classic iteration had what tasted like a zesty ranch dressing that was tangy and herby. I adored the mayo-y tang and sweetness of the honey mustard pick, while the spicy one had a smoky, medium-hot, triple-pepper glaze that made it messier than the others, which IMO, sort of defeats the purpose of a wrap, since they’re designed to be eaten on the go.

2. Chick-fil-A

  • What’s On It: grilled chicken breast, green leaf lettuce and shredded Monterey Jack and cheddar cheeses on flaxseed flour flatbread
  • Options: original, spicy
  • Price: $8

These were super substantial and surprisingly tasty for being grilled chicken. Sure, they’re the most expensive on this list (and fair warning, the chicken inside is served cold), but they’re made with quality ingredients and very filling. The bread was like a whole wheat lavash-type wrap instead of a tortilla. The chicken was black pepper-forward and garlicky. While the initial bite was a bit dry, I took the cashier’s advice and paired it with Chick-fil-A’s Avocado Lime Ranch dressing, which made it a zillion times tastier. The chicken was well shredded in the classic Cool Wrap, making for easy eating without accidental messes or large pieces falling out, while the spicy version was more flavorful and less dry with bigger pieces of meat. Its heat, however, was basic and mild. Both wraps felt very fresh with plenty of crisp, verdant lettuce.

1. McDonald’s

  • What’s On It: one McCrispy chicken strip, shredded lettuce and shredded cheese on a flour tortilla
  • Options: ranch, spicy
  • Price: $3

Oh, Snack Wrap. I missed you so. It turns out that fans petitioned for its revival with good reason, because I’m giving Ronald McDonald the fast food chicken wrap crown. The tortilla was probably the softest and fluffiest of all the chains. The newly launched McCrispy strip was indeed crisp and very well-seasoned, albeit smaller than the wider, flatter pieces I remember of Snack Wraps past. The ranch iteration is best for people who used to eat them back in the day, since it’s the only variety that made an identical comeback. But the spicy one was truly delicious with a surprisingly nuanced sauce that had fruity, peppery, sriracha energy.
