How to Style Every Type of Sweater You Own

There are three facts about winter we know to be true: 1) No matter how cold it gets, we will still order an iced coffee. 2) There are far worse sins than buying ourselves another pair of black booties before getting gifts for others. And 3) We have enough sweaters to last through spring, but for some reason we wear the same one over and over again. In the spirit of good style cheer, here are six fresh and exciting ways to style every type of sweater you own, so you can strut out the door with a whole new lease on life (or, at the very least, your closet).

1. A Chunky Turtleneck

We know, we know. Your go-to winter outfit is pulling on a big turtleneck over jeans and flying out the door. But when you feel like mixing it up a little, might we suggest pairing your chunkiest wool knit with a midi pencil skirt and boots? The slim-fitting bottom balances the voluminous topper and anchors your figure nicely, while the knee-high boots provide extra coverage for those windy winter days.

2. A Sweater Dress

Psst… We’ll let you in on a styling secret: You don’t always have to pair your sweater dress with over-the-knee boots and a cropped jacket (ya know, like every other gal on the ’Gram). Instead, switch things up by bundling a thick cozy coat (we recommend a teddy bear variety) and blanket scarf over your knit dress to keep you warm, and don a pair of hiking boots to add edge to the otherwise feminine look.

3. A Grandpa Cardigan

Throw your long-line cardigan over a white button-down or turtleneck and trendy high-waisted Bermuda shorts (yep, they’re officially back, people). The length of the cardigan mimics the thigh-covering shorts, elongating your legs and pulling everything together. Then add a pair of knee-high or ankle-covering booties to seal the deal—tights optional.

4. A Crewneck Pullover

If you hesitate to wear this style because you think it feels shapeless, we get it. But you can easily remedy the issue by dressing it up with an oversized blazer and skinny pants. The resulting cold-weather ensemble is as suitable for happy hour as it is for boardroom meetings. It also hides every type of sweater sin by creating a more tailored line of sight—plus, we love the way the cuffs poke out of the jacket’s sleeves (the easiest styling trick ever).

5. A Cropped Cardigan

Just because it has buttons doesn’t mean it has to be worn over something. Instead, we love treating our slim-fitting cardigan sweaters as tops and buttoning them all the way up the front. Tuck the waist of the sweater into a satin midi skirt and throw on a coordinating jacket. The contrasting fabrics balance out the ensemble so it’s not too dressy or too dowdy. Et voilà: You also just put together your holiday party look.

6. A Metallic Sweater

Shiny or embellished knits aren’t just reserved for parties. Play up the whimsy of your sequined or metallic-threaded sweater with a pleated faux-leather maxi skirt that hits just above your ankles—too long and it’ll look frumpy. Tuck in the sweater so you can see the waistband of your flowy skirt, and finally, add a structured mini bag for a modern accessory pop.
