Save vs. Splurge: How to Approach Your Fall Shopping List
If you’re anything like us, then you probably have about a million or so items on your fall fashion wishlist. And probably not anywhere near a million-dollar budget to acquire it all. That’s where planning and smart spending comes into play. Of course there are going to be some items that are worth blowing the big bucks on (like leather, duh), but there are other pieces that you can spend $25 and still rake in the compliments. Here’s how to save and splurge this fall, resulting in your chicest wardrobe yet.
Save: Oversize Blazers
When we say there are a lot of affordable and oh-so-cute blazers out there, we’re not exaggerating. From a classic tartan to a solid khaki, you don’t have to dip into your savings to nail this tailored piece. Just make sure the style you pick fits your shoulders and arms just right—when in doubt, take it straight to your tailor for alterations.
Splurge: Leather Everything
Think about your all-time favorite piece of clothing (be it a blouse, a pair of trousers or a super-flattering dress). Now, imagine it in a sumptuous leather. Yeahhh, that’s nice. Whether you prefer real or faux, it’s not worth it to skimp on quality when it comes to leather goods. These pieces are great investments with lasting power, so make sure you store them properly and treat them well and you’ll keep wearing them for years to come.
Save: Moody Florals
There’s something about a unique floral print that feels so fresh and exciting during the first few wears...only to droop like an old bouquet about a season later. In order to help your closet bloom, find a fun floral that you won’t feel guilty donating after a few wears.
Unlike plenty of other patterns out here, houndstooth is a true classic. (Seriously, just ask your mom or grandmother if they have any hanging in their closet.) That means this is hardly the last time we’ll be seeing the monochrome print splashed across cool blazers and elegant dresses. Drop a bit more money on these pieces, opting for some of the more timeless shapes, so you can get years of wear out of these styles.
Save: Cargo Pants
Your eyes aren’t tricking you: Cargo pants are back, in a big way. But there are so, so many flattering styles of these pants from tons of affordable brands, that you probably don’t want to drop some designer dollars on them. Plus, cargoes were made to be casual, so treat them that way (and don’t forget to pair yours with a T-shirt and a crisp blazer).
Splurge: Fleece Jackets
Hear us out on this one: You won’t regret splurging on a fleece jacket if you know how to style it correctly. Obviously it will pair perfectly with your leggings and sneakers, but you should also take this soft style for a spin with floral dresses or your favorite light-wash jeans and heeled booties. Plus, everyone will be jealous of (and generously compliment) your fuzzy new jacket.
