The evolution of athleticwear as everyday clothing has been moving along at a steady clip for ages, but in just the past five or so years it’s really taken off—and it appears we may be nearing the peak. Tennis skirts became a summertime staple in 2019 before becoming a full-on tenniscore craze just a few years later, thanks to Zendaya’s sexy, tennis-centric movie Challengers. But for fall 2025, it appears there’s a new champion sport in town that everyone wants to embrace: rugby. And I have to admit, I’m not at all surprised.

The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris definitely deserve some of the credit (though I’d give most to Ilona Maher), as does Taylor Swift, who rocked a rugby shirtdress with knee-high boots last year. But rugby shirts were also a big trend back in the late ‘90s/early 2000s, a time period it seems we’re all trying to relive through our clothes these days. With so many other fashion trends of that era making major comebacks—slip skirts and dresses, baguette-inspired bags, eclectic layering—it is entirely unsurprising that rugby shirts would be coming back around for another turn in the spotlight.

Just in case you didn’t hold on to your old J. Crew ones from back in the day, here are eight classic rugby shirts to help you embrace rugbycore like a total pro.

This quarter-zip from Free People makes for the coziest outerwear layer thanks to its 100 percent cotton construction—and those thick stripes definitely scream rugbycore. The drop shoulders and roomy sleeves give it more of a slouchy, relaxed look (and feel) that reviewers can't get enough of. “This pullover/sweatshirt is very comfy. Oversized but fits just how I like it,” writes one.

You'll quickly fall in love with this sweater featuring a button placket, classic collar and alternating open-knit stripes that ensure it stays nice and breathable, even if you're layering it this winter. While I'm partial to this red-and-white colorway, there are two others to choose from that both nail the vibe. I also adore its hip-length cut, which allows you to pair it with everything from high-waist jeans to maxi skirts.

This polo sweater puts a preppy twist on the sporty staple. Featuring bold yellow stripes tempered by brown and blue ones, it has a totally vintage vibe. Plus, it is super layerable, as you can wear it over a lighter button-up shirt for a different style, and underneath a coat when it gets colder.

This rugby top is just baggy enough to look like you grabbed it out of your boyfriend's closet on your way out the door—in a chic way. It's made from 100 percent cotton, which should supply some decent heft without leaving you sweating so much that you look like you actually just stepped off the field, while the oversized button placket and collar create a striking visual contrast against the burgundy and blue stripes. If you ask me, this number is totally timeless, even if it happens to be very trendy right now.

Another fabulous under-$100 option, this J. Crew cutie comes in four stripe combinations. My personal favorite is definitely the burgundy and blue pictured above, which you can sport as you would any other striped tee, but will surely go with more items in my wardrobe than some of the busier prints might. The brand notes, and reviewers generally agree, that this rugby shirt fits true to size. However, it is designed to have a slightly roomier cut, so if you want something a bit more snug, you may prefer to go down a size.

More than 2,000 Madewell shoppers have purchased this rugby knit in the past week alone, and if I had to guess, I'd say it's 100 percent merino wool construction is the main draw. It achieves the cool-girl, sporty look we're after without skimping on luxury, and life's too short not to indulge in the uber soft feel of merino wool—especially when it's freezing out.

A cute option for those who want a dressier look, this rugby sweater has a ribbed-knit design and stand-out stripes that come in a variety of color combinations. The cotton material is also reportedly incredibly soft and breathable, according to buyers, who note that it is warm, comfortable and "great for fall, early winter and spring."

If you’re the type who always asks, “but does it come in black?”, then this simple black-and-white number is sure to fit in perfectly with your existing wardrobe. It’s made of a wonderfully soft ribbed knit and has a roomy cut that still fits true to size. Both those features give this rugby shirt a more elevated vibe, as does the neutral color palette—no wonder it’s a best seller!
