puritan collars fall 2025: joy sunday as bianca barclay in 'wednesday'
Netflix

When the first season of Tim Burton’s Wednesday hit Netflix, it quickly smashed records and ushered in a wave of goth glamour—with a Puritan twist. Indeed, the central plot features a demonic pilgrim as its primary antagonist, and so, with the second season dropping August 6, I’m predicting that puritan collars will be everywhere this fall.

The internet’s favorite misanthrope isn’t the only place from which I’m drawing my inspiration. Brands like Damson Madder and Scandi-It-girl brand Ganni have been serving the puritan collar for the last few years, making them, if anything, early predictors. And if you’re thinking, “How can dressing like a Protestant possibly be cool?!,” let me tell you, the riffs on this collar are fashion-making statements. (And, FWIW, the antiquarian collar, in general, is back, seen at Chanel and Dior, among others.) Think bows, ruffles, lace, stripes, buttons, poofy sleeves! Proof that you don’t have to be an aspiring graveyard princess to pull it off. I’m predicting that the style will have some longevity, not only thanks to Wednesday but because Erdem’s Resort 26 collection was rife with them. Below, five stylish but classic iterations to shop.

The Only 8 Summer Handbag Trends You Need to Know for 2025

I will always love an interesting take on a classic silhouette, and this white button-down gets gussied up thanks to a ruffly puritan collar that’s statement-making without being overwhelming. (Appreciated by this wide-shouldered gal!) There are puffy sleeves and  contrasting buttons to add a little visual pop. I also love that it’s 100 percent cotton—one of my personal fashion goals has been to stop buying synthetics.

While the puritan collar on this Damson Madder blouse is a tad more traditional (much more square and drapey), the cherry red hue is anything but snoozy. There are front buttons, puffed sleeves even Anne Shirley would be proud of and contrasting white piping for added pop. I love the tailored, fitted cut of this 100 percent cotton blouse, which makes it feel a bit more formal than your standard button-down.

Bubble hems are still going strong, and this charming Ganni dress marries three big fashion trends: Smocking, puritan collars and the jellyfish skirt. It’s A-line with a dropped waist, and the smocking creates a flattering shape while still being comfortably stretchy. Oversized puffy sleeves and a deep V neck make it feel playful and modern while still nodding to the classic silhouette.

PureWow editors are big fans of Maeve, the brand behind the famous Colette pants. Something that’d pair beautifully with them? This lacy, cotton cream cardigan. I’m loving the slightly oversized fit, which helps relax the boxy cut. The lace detailing on the collar closes the sweater with a dainty bow.

Yet another example of a wardrobe staple done with a playful twist. This plaid button-down features a gently ruffled puritan collar that leans towards Peter Pan—rounder, less sharp—with fun rouleau button loops, patch pockets and detailed embroidery. Anything but boring, but endlessly versatile.
