I have something of a reputation amongst friends, family and colleagues for my dresser drawer dedicated to…pajamas. Linen and silk, shorts and long sleeves, even nightgowns—my collection is way past the burgeoning mark. It’s out of control. My affinity for the pajama set first bloomed when I lived in Paris. I was an au pair for a cute 10-year-old boy who also had a section of his—I kid you not, armoire—dedicated to sleepwear. They were all matching sets, all with lapels and collars and breast pockets galore (he used said pockets to store the class hamster when we babysat it for the weekend). At the time, I was still sleeping in my ratty college pajama bottoms and miscellaneous sweatshirts. I was envious. When I got home, the first thing I did was order myself a pair of pajamas. It’s been a runaway train ever since.

Together with fellow PureWow editors, I have created this comprehensive guide to the most comfortable pajama sets at every price point. That includes PureWow readers’ favorite Nordstrom Moonlight pajamas ($TK), the under-$25 Cider Stripe Loungewear Set ($23), the crazy splurge that is Clementine Sleepwear Organic Silk Pajamas ($790)—don’t pass out—and my personal favorites, the Petite Plume Olivia Pajamas ($138). Sleep tight, and don’t let the bed bugs bite.

1. Nordstrom Moonlight Pajamas

What We Like

  • available as pants, shorts and capris
  • lightweight fabric
  • great for petites

What We Don't Like

  • fabric isn't cool to the touch

nordstrom

Fun fact: Nordstrom’s famous Moonlight pajamas are a PureWow reader favorite. Made from a soft and stretchy Tencel/Spandex blend, they come as a pants, capri and short set. The notched collar gives the style a touch of sophistication, like you could actually get out of bed in the middle of the night and presentably open the front door. PureWow’s Director of Affiliate Strategy, Pam Masin, says of her pair: “The biggest difference between these and similar sets from different brands is that the material feels lighter, but they do not have the cool-to-touch feel of some of its competitors. Another big win for these PJs is that they've held up extremely well in the wash. The color remains just as vibrant and there is minimal piling after three years of wear.”

These pajamas are Masin’s go-to in transitional weather, and she also recommends them for fellow petites. She says the pant length is a true ankle crop and hits her just right at 5’2’’. The only thing to note is that if you prefer an oversized fit, go up a size as the Moonlight pajamas run slimmer than other brands.

2. Quince Linen Pajamas

What We Like

  • under $100
  • 100 percent linen

What We Don't Like

  • some may find the material scratchy

Quince

One of my personal resolutions is to stop buying virgin plastic, and linen is my preferred textile for its cooling breathability. I’ve easily paid over $100 for 100 percent linen pieces, but Quince’s two-piece pajama set comes in at under $75. Gallery Media Group Associate Director, Account Management, Emilie Benedict, owns these PJs in navy.

“These are more of my ‘social pajamas’ if I'm on a family trip lounging around in the living room and want to look pulled together,” she says. Benedict tells me she finds this linen a little stiff and scratchy, so if you live in silk or stretchy, jersey-like fabrics, these might not be for you. I, however, am never bothered by linen with a rougher texture and would definitely add these to my pajama drawer.

3. Cozy Earth Long-Sleeve Pajamas

What We Like

  • sturdy, breathable fabric with great stretch
  • can be more fitted
  • uses sustainable bamboo

What We Don't Like

  • not sold as a set
  • pants can run long

Cozy Earth

I love seeing bamboo incorporated into textiles. It’s a much more sustainable option due to its prolific growth pattern. Cozy Earth’s pajamas are made from bamboo viscose with spandex that make them stretchy and ultra-comfortable. I have a pair and love that it’s more fitted. (I hate swimming in oversized clothes.) I’m not alone in my love for the brand; PureWow Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay has some, too, and calls them her “company pajamas.”

“They're polished enough to wear around the house no matter who's staying the night (whether it be my in-laws or my bestie),” she says. “I was initially drawn to this crimson two-piece long-sleeve because of the bright color, but the soft material has made it my nightly go-to.” While the material is thick and cozy, Yohay says she never feels overheated or encumbered.

Best Splurge

4. Clementine Sleepwear Organic Silk Pajamas

What We Like

  • 100 percent silk
  • mother-of-pearl buttons
  • can be worn as a daytime outfit

What We Don't Like

  • runs incredibly large, so size down for a less oversized fit
  • hand wash

Clementine

Is $790 an absolute bananas price to pay for pajamas? Probably. OK, yes. Are Clementine’s 100 percent organic, OEKO-TEX certified, non-toxic dyed, plastic-free pajamas the best pajamas I’ve ever worn? Hands down, yes. I’ve been following this brand since they launched and strongly admire the founder’s dedication to both her creative spirit and the environment. When I say there’s no plastic, I mean there’s no plastic. Just drapey silk and mother-of-pearl buttons. They’re divine for sleeping—cozy but cooling—but for me, the real pleasure is in getting a two-for-one. When these pajamas first launched, the founder wore them to the celebratory dinner party, and I swear it was the chicest thing in the room that night. While I’ve had plenty of beautiful sleeps in this PJ set, I’m most looking forward to donning them for a midnight Soho Diner adventure.

Most Affordable

5. Cider Stripe Loungewear Set

What We Like

  • lightweight
  • shorts have pockets
  • budget-friendly

What We Don't Like

  • limited sizing

Cider

On the total flip side, I was also enamored with Cider’s under-$25 camisole lounge set, which is great if you’re searching for something cute and comfortable on a budget. The high-rise shorts have functional pockets, and they’re great for jamming in my phone or whatever else I’m toting around the house. They’re a polyester/cotton blend, making them super lightweight and great for the heatwave I unexpectedly found myself weathering in Los Angeles. The fabric is also incredibly durable. I get itchy in the summer and when my skin is dry, and sometimes I end up scarring more delicate fabrics or 100 percent natural weaves. To top off its list of star qualities, the set is also machine washable.

Best Mom Hack

6. Kindred Bravely Clea Pajamas

What We Like

  • under $100
  • easy nursing access
  • functional pockets

What We Don't Like

  • pants can run short

Kindred Bravely

“The one piece of advice I've given to all expecting moms: Buy pajamas with pockets,” Masin says. “I was gifted these PJs by my sister (who has two toddlers, so she knew the drill) right before I had my daughter. I instantly loved how soft they felt, but it wasn't until I was in the newborn trenches that I realized just how essential pant pockets are. Whether I was holding my carrier-hating baby around the house 24/7 or needed a place to stash my phone while bringing pumped milk downstairs in the middle of the night, these pants were truly a godsend postpartum. Not to mention the cooling bamboo fabric that made night sweats a tiny bit more bearable. I was so annoyed when these were in the wash that I bought another pair less than four weeks after giving birth.”

The Mom's Rec

7. Lake Pima Cotton Long Pajamas

What We Like

  • convenient for nursing
  • feels polished
  • stretchy and comfortable

What We Don't Like

  • no pockets

Lake

Lake is a brand known for its ultra-comfy loungewear—including a maternity line. PureWow Senior Director of Special Projects & Royals Rachel Bowie loves the design for being mom-friendly while also put-together.

"This set—called the Long-Long—is something that felt both luxe and cozy every time I reached for it," she says. "I wore it while postpartum and well beyond, too. The scoop neck and snap button front was a dream for nursing, but I still felt polished and not like I was wearing overt maternity wear. More than anything, the set is pretty and flattering—but still gives plenty of stretch."

Best for Bridal Parties

8. Birdy Grey Bamboo Pajamas

What We Like

  • tons of color options
  • friendly price point
  • personalization available

What We Don't Like

  • fabric starts to look worn after a couple years

Birdy Grey

Birdy Gray made its name doing affordable bridal party suits and gowns, but the brand has a totally underrated pajama shop. Because are you really getting married if you haven’t gifted your besties matching pajama sets to mark the occasion? Lucky for me and all you other single people out there, you don’t need to be a bride to shop here. Pajamas are anyone’s for the taking, and one of the best gifts I ever gave was a linen set to a friend for her birthday. I wear a linen short set in the summer and stick to a soft and stretchy bamboo rayon one in spring and fall. They’re machine-washable and low-maintenance, as far as clothing goes, but still manage to look polished with the piped lapel, short and breast pockets and satin drawstring.

Best for Pregnancy and Postpartum

9. Solly Baby Tie-Top Long-Sleeve Sleep Set

What We Like

  • nursing-friendly tie-top
  • ultra-soft fabric
  • doubles as nursing cover

What We Don't Like

  • waistband can be a little snug

Solly Baby

Pregnancy and postpartum are trying times, without having to figure out what you’re going to wear. Yohay says she lived in Solly Baby’s pajamas in the first few weeks after her son was born.

“The material is insanely soft and comfortable, with just the right amount of stretch,” she says. “Solly Baby is known for its ultrasoft baby wraps (IYKYK), and the brand uses a similar luxurious fabric in its pajama sets. The tie-top design is feminine and flowy (yet still flattering) and is even breastfeeding-friendly, doubling as a breathable nursing cover so you can feed your baby at home without flashing the whole family. The Bleu Toile print brings me joy every time I see it, and if you love a mommy-and-me moment, they also offer matching sets for baby and toddler.”

For Crazy Patterns

10. Room Service Sienna Pajamas

What We Like

  • super soft and stretchy
  • crazy patterns
  • available as shorts and capris

What We Don't Like

  • limited neutral patterns

Room Service

If your fashion M.O. is loud and bright, Room Service should absolutely be on your radar. I tested the Sienna pajamas in the pattern “Scarlet Safari,” and it might just be the most chaotic print I’ve ever worn. There are zebras and peacocks, leopards and a watermelon trim on the lapel and pant cuffs. They’re capris. So much is going on. But they’re stretchy and soft, ideal for transitional weather when I want a little more coverage but it’s too warm to throw on bulkier PJs. You can find these as both shorts and capris, and if a Safari isn’t your vibe, there are more than 20 other crazy prints to choose from.

For the Fashion Girls

11. Bedhead Fashion Week Pajamas

What We Like

  • thick, stretchy fabric
  • multiple bottoms available
  • not too oversized

What We Don't Like

  • no drawstring waist

Bedhead

As soon as I saw Bedhead’s Fashion Week PJs I fell in love. The print encapsulates a quintessential cornerstone of New York life, with vibrant yellow taxis, cameras snapping and the girls strutting. It’s available as shorts, capris and pants; I opted for the capris. Of all the cotton jammies I’ve tried, these are my favorite. The material is thick but stretchy and breathable, there are functioning pockets, a smart lapel and piping all around. One of my pet peeves is super oversized sleepwear. Bedhead’s were fitted enough to define my shape but not restrictive in sleep or movement. While I don’t like a drawstring waist, those who want adjustability should know this set doesn’t come with one.

Most Functional

12. Petite Plume Olivia Pajamas

What We Like

  • comfortable waistband
  • monogramming available
  • ¾ sleeves

What We Don't Like

  • some buyers say may run slightly large

Petite Plume

I garnered lots of compliments on my Petite Plume pajamas for their interesting design. Prior to owning a pair, I had never had three-quarter sleeves before, and now I’m hooked. I’m always cold, even in the summer, and as temps have started to rise, this sleeve length has proved a good compromise. The Olivia PJs also have my favorite waistband. In general, I’m not a fan of drawstrings, but this one has a thick ribbon to match a thick band. It’s incredibly stretchy, not restrictive, but at the same time not too loose and requiring the drawstring to keep the pants up. They’re the Goldilocks of “oversized,” AKA just right.

The Cult-Favorite

13. Eberjay Gisele Pajamas

What We Like

  • super soft and stretchy
  • breathable fabric

What We Don't Like

  • shorts are very short
  • no pockets

Eberjey

For a while it seemed I couldn’t walk a mile without seeing Eberjey pajamas. They were in ads on the subway, gifted like potato chips at brand events and all the cool girls seemed to have them. After being given a pair, I will concede. They are comfortable. The Tencel is soft and stretchy, there’s a breast pocket and the piping feels smart. For me, the only downside is that the shorts are so short. As someone who typically opts for pants, I felt like the shorts were nonexistent. But if that’s your style (or it’s super hot out), then Eberjey won’t disappoint.

Best Pima Cotton

14. Journelle Portia Lounge Set

What We Like

  • supremely soft
  • breathable

What We Don't Like

  • not sold as a set

Journelle

In the hierarchy of cotton, Pima cotton is the tippy-top. Journelle’s French Terry blend of said cotton plus modal and Lycra makes for a fabric that’s almost buttery. Light, breathable, stretchy—in the summer, it’s divine. The shorts have deep pockets, and I appreciate the look of a lounge set for occasions when I want to sleep comfortably but don’t want straight-up pajamas. The only downside is that the top and shorts are sold separately.
