It was the summer of 2023. Margot Robbie was taking red carpets by storm as the living, breathing embodiment of a Barbie doll—bubblegum, blonde, bedazzled. Cut to three years later and the star has gone full dark romance for the promotion of Wuthering Heights, the highly anticipated (and highly debated) Emily Brontë book adaptation from director Emerald Fennell.

Gone are the pink polka dots and perky mini dresses. Lately, the Aussie actress has embraced dramatic volume and tendril-like frills, not to mention velvet, lace and corsets galore.

I'd like to think that I predicted this shift a few months ago, when the buzz surrounding both Wuthering Heights and Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein plunged pop culture into a Gothic romance renaissance. But the real secret behind Robbie's sudden fashion evolution? That would be none other than her longtime stylist, Andrew Mukamal.

Mukamal collaborated with Robbie on her looks for the Barbie press tour—proof enough of his masterful approach to method dressing. But the Victorian revival vibes of Robbie's Wuthering Heights ensembles take the idea of cinematic style to the next level.

His sartorial strategy, which helps bring the mood of the movie to real life, involves "going deep, finding meaning and telling a story with outfits," according to Robbie, who discussed his styling process on a recent podcast with Vogue. She also added that Mukamal "came to set while we were shooting, [and] spent time with Jacqueline [Durran], our costume designer, which normally doesn’t happen," adding a whole other layer to the film/press tour fashion connection.

Personally, I've been obsessed with the on-theme looks and the film's moody aesthetic on the whole. Whether or not you plan to dress up, Catherine Earnshaw-style, for your viewing of the movie, you can embrace some of Robbie's (and Mukamal's) stylistic choices with these romantic pieces below.
