You know the saying, "rules are made to be broken"? Well, two of our favorite celebrities are giving us a masterclass in exactly how to do that, sartorially speaking that is.

One of our favorite styling tricks when we just don't know what to wear is to opt for a monochromatic outfit. Picking one color and running with it is an easy way to look incredibly chic and pulled together, with minimal effort. But while the rule of dressing in monochrome is to usually pick one singular hue for all (or at least the vast majority) of the elements of your look, the Princess of Wales and the Princess of Hollywood (ahem, Reese Witherspoon) have just proved us wrong.

While attending the 2025 Irish Guards' St. Patrick's Day Parade, Kate Middleton donned an elegant dark green tailored Alexander McQueen coat teamed with an almost-matching felt beret style hat and green scarf. She finished the look with black suede knee-high boots and green tourmaline and diamond earrings. While all of the green elements work well together, it's clear that the coat has a blue-ish hue to it and the hat and scarf have more emerald undertones.

Perhaps the royal was taking a note out of Reese Witherspoon's fashion playbook. The A-lister recently turned heads in New York City rocking bold red pants with a matching blouse—but here’s the chic kicker—she styled the look with maroon heels and a coordinating bag, proving once again that monochrome doesn’t have to be an exact match to be effortlessly stylish.

So what's the style lesson from these two fashion queens? That when it comes to monochrome, close enough is more than enough.
