Frank & Eileen first came onto my radar via Meghan Markle (the Duchess of Sussex was known to favor the brand’s renowned button-up shirts, famously wearing one to a royal tour Down Under in Australia in 2018). I count myself lucky that, over the years, I’ve had the chance to meet the brand’s founder, Audrey McLoghlin, in person and learn about the craftsmanship, comfort and wearability inherent in her signature design.

But beyond the button-ups, I’d never tried Frank & Eileen’s extensive range, which includes denim, lounge-style pants, even knitwear. I knew it had long-garnered rave reviews from friends and strangers (and OK, Julianne Moore), which is why when the store opened a brick-and-mortar location on the Upper East Side of New York City late last year, I knew I had to drop by to test the full scope of Frank & Eileen’s offerings IRL.

Don’t get me wrong: Its button-ups were top of my list as I entered the beautiful and thoughtfully designed boutique (a handwritten love letter between Audrey’s Irish grandparents, who put the Frank and Eileen in Frank & Eileen, is framed in the stairwell; there’s also a secret candy bar hidden away that’s chock full of Irish-made sweets and snacks). But I was excited to experience core pieces from the rest of the collection, too, and see how they looked on someone 5’2”—the ultimate test.

What followed was a try-on session where I felt whisked away to the likes of Montecito; also like I suddenly had a wardrobe that would fit right into a Nancy Meyers movie (#goals). Here, my favorite petite-friendly pieces from Frank & Eileen.

1. The Bum-Covering Shirts

As I mentioned, the Eileen button-up shirt was my entry point to Frank & Eileen, circa 2019. Available in a range of fabrics, depending on your preference and the season, it’s a signature design within the Frank & Eileen collection and exudes that ‘California cool girl’ aesthetic that feels synonymous with the West Coast-founded brand. But in a world with an unlimited amount of button-up options to choose from, from a petite perspective, the ‘Eileen’ offers a near-perfect fit. The cut is somehow roomy, yet tailored, and the button placement at the bust falls in a way that flatters, regardless of your height. (Ditto the singular chest pocket.) Most importantly, I’ve always felt that the hem-tail of this shirt is exactly the right length, even for my 5’2” frame, providing enough bum coverage so that I’m never pulling at the edges of its hem. In my try-on session, a small fit the bill—and still came with plenty of blouse (my preference is to wear a shirt like this a bit oversize). I gasped at the color range and the chance to touch and feel them in store.

2 The Denim

2. The Denim

Raise your hand if you’re a short girl with a denim complex. (I absolutely am.) That’s why I’m pretty sure I grimaced when the lovely associates at Frank & Eileen not only handed me jeans to try on, they handed me a barrel style. (It’s true that I’ve been slowly branching out with my denim silhouettes, but since more volume tends to overwhelm a petite frame, I stick largely to skinny or straight-leg cuts.) This is where the Brennan in particular blew me away. With a 26.5-inch inseam, it worked well on my 5’2” height. It was also so comfortable, giving structure, while also gently hugging my waist. The curve of the silhouette also had a slimming effect, somehow—perhaps it was the way the fit tapers at both the waistband and the cuff, but I loved this style. Ditto the Galway, which felt more in-line with a silhouette I’d typically wear, though still a wide-leg. With its 26-inch inseam and distressed ankle-length hem, this was another pair of jeans I’d live in.

3 The Cargo Pant

3. The Cute Cargo Pants

Reader, this was my biggest a-ha moment in the fitting room. Cargo pants? With those rectangular “joey” pockets that wrap around my thigh? I could never. But after trying them on, I was stunned at the beauty of this fit. First, the fabric—what the brand calls its smooth, elevated Italian Peached twill is so soft and luxe-feeling. This is a cargo pant that delivers polish. Like the denim, the inseam is designed to be petite-friendly at 26.5-inches and the silhouette is barrel-style (again, stretching way beyond my comfort zone). But the slight crop of the fit makes it ultra-flattering for anyone with a shorter frame. This is a pant that hits in all the right places for sure. (Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the Perry NYC Crewneck Tee and the Montecito Cardigan—these are two more styles that felt elegant and lovely on my shorter self.)

4 The Improvised Lounge Set

4. The Improvised Lounge Set

A lounge set is a closet staple, but—based on my try-on session at Frank & Eileen—it doesn’t have to be matchy-matchy. It’s true that the brand’s collection of pieces is all designed to pair quite beautifully with one another, but I was particularly impressed by the unexpected yet effortless combination of the Penny Patch Pocket sweatpant in fleece with the Eileen shirt, which comes available in a similar color palette and the exact same fleece material. Together, it felt elegant and modern. It also fit like a glove. Once again, it was the wide-leg crop of the pant (with its 24-inch inseam) that made it work with my 5’2” height. Paired together, this is a lounge set that I could easily see myself wearing every day—not just outside the house to run errands or for travel, but also to the playground to chase after my kids.

5 The Jackie
Rachel Bowie

5. The ‘Jackie’

“Try the Jackie! Try the Jackie!” the in-store associates suggested when I was compiling the pieces that felt best suited to my short-girl frame. It didn’t hurt that I have Love Story on the brain (does anyone else immediately associate clothing names with pop culture moments?), but I also have been eyeing more collarless styles as we head into spring (the less fabric, the more flattering it tends to be for petites). This was such an immediate favorite—and looked good no matter what I paired it with (hello, those cargo pants!). Designed to give Kennedy-inspired vibes, it felt feminine without being too stuffy (the raw edge of the hem helps with that). It hit just at my waistline without being boxy, too. This is a piece that would be a permanent closet staple—and, in fleece, one you could reach for year-round.
