If you haven’t stopped everything to go and see The Materialists yet, consider this your PSA to do so right now. The latest arrival—a rom com—from Celine Song, aka the director behind the Oscar-winning film, Past Lives, is clever and moving. Much like Past Lives, it’s the kind of movie that will leave you mulling over all your romantic choices and why we choose to date the people we do.

Major plot points aside, it’s the film’s sartorial excellence that I can’t stop thinking about—namely, the cool girl wardrobe owned by Lucy (played by Dakota Johnson) who lives and works as a matchmaker in New York. No joke, my friend and I have been talking and texting about her fashion since we left the theater. (I’ll call it out later, but there’s a distressed leather tote bag in particular that we think pretty much every working girl should own.)

Truly, the brands on display in the movie range from Aritzia to Dôen to Reformation, too. Every piece is impeccably styled and, for the most part, available in price points that aren’t too far out of reach. It truly is the best sub-plot of the film, which skillfully examines the difference between “good on paper” and being good for each other. (Extra special shout-out to the impossible choice between Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, oof.)
Now, without further ado, these are the 5 looks I can’t wait to replicate after watching the hit film.

1. Jeans + Button-Up
It’s as simple as it is timeless: A white button-up with a pair of jeans in a lighter wash is a sartorial combination that requires minimal thought while making a major impact. What I love most about Johnson’s styling here is the full tuck-in (no French tuck in sight), but also how a fairly basic-feeling look is instantly elevated by Johnson’s collar-style necklace and wind-swept updo.

2. A Floral Dress + Sneakers
In the film, Johnson reaches for a few different Dôen styles, but it’s this dress—called the Nevara—that really leaps off the screen. (No spoilers, but her character wears it to a wedding and it’s both elevated and romantic.) Sadly, the butter yellow hue is past season, but there are currently other color offerings (fleurs de provence is a lovely alternative, IMO). Either way, it’s clear a dress like this is a wardrobe workhorse for weddings, weekend brunch dates and more. (I also love that Johnson pairs it with sneakers in the film.)

3. A Floor-Length Trench
If there was a Materialists capsule wardrobe, Johnson’s trench coat would be a cornerstone piece. But it’s the length that really helps it make a style statement. (Also, the styling, like her slightly undone looped belt knot—perfection.) Johnson’s character is intentionally going incognito in this scene, but with the addition of a baseball hat and sneakers, can’t you see yourself donning a similar outfit to go to the grocery store or to run errands? (I can.)

4. A Mini-Skirt + Blazer
A blazer, a mini-skirt and a gorgeous set of knee-high boots—this look, which Johnson’s character wears to the office and to meet with clients, is sophisticated and fresh. Add a pair of sheer black tights and it’s just the sort of professional attire that can carry you from work to an end of day happy hour.

5. That Working Girl Bag
It’s the tote my friend and I couldn’t stop texting about: From Hereu, the distressed leather style—with its V-shaped closure—defines Lucy’s look from the minute we meet her walking around Soho. As my pal remarked, it really is the perfect work bag, thanks to its unique silhouette and seemingly spacious capacity. If we were to only snag one piece from the film, this is it.
