As a gal who is 5’2”, I’m forever on the hunt for clothing that looks great straight off the rack. (I also have a beloved Brooklyn-based seamstress on speed dial for the fashions that need a little extra love and adjusting.) That’s why I was thrilled to discover the ‘Havana’ dress from Brochu Walker. To be clear, I was initially drawn by the color palette—it comes in a whopping 22(!) different shades. And when the package arrived at my home, I popped it on for a fit check and was pleasantly surprised: As it turns out, this is a dress that feels tailor-made for petites.

First, a Bit about Brochu Walker

Brochu Walker is a Los Angeles-based brand that has been on my radar for a bit. It is known for its commitment to what it calls “conscious luxury,” but also its mix of classic and effortless silhouettes ranging from sweaters and knitwear to dresses and pants. The aesthetic is a combo of European and American minimalist style. (The CEO, Karine Dubner, is French-born.) Celebrities ranging from Meghan Markle, who famously wore Brochu Walker’s ‘Joseph’ top to help announce the launch of her As Ever brand this past spring, to Julia Roberts, Eva Longoria and Oprah Winfrey are all long-time fans of the brand. (In fact, Oprah named the brand’s layered V-neck sweater to her “Favorite Things” list last year.)

Why the ‘Havana’ Style Is Unique

Brochu Walker

The ‘Havana’ dress in particular is a signature Brochu Walker style—and one that has long been considered a breezy and figure-flattering closet essential. It makes sense: The shirtdress style features a tiered skirt, delicate puff sleeves and a V-neck. The material is a mix of polyester and cotton, but its washed cotton finish gives it a crisp feel that stays largely wrinkle-free while you wear it. Finally, there’s the color range: The shorter sleeves and lightweight fabric give it a summer-friendly feel, but with 22 hues to choose from (ranging from Azure to Violetta), this is definitely a style that can be worn well into fall. (Just pop on a cute cardigan sweater and you’re set.)

More About My Test Drive—and Why the ‘Havana’ Is a Dream for Petites

After reading reviews, I went with a size small for my 5’2” frame and found that it hit at exactly ankle length. But that’s not all—the fit across the bodice, the shoulders and chest made the ‘Havana’ something I knew would be a summer staple from the minute I put it on. (Something I’ve learned from my aforementioned seamstress—what typically ruins the fit of a dress for someone with a petite frame happens at the shoulders and armpits. It’s also a pretty quick fix.)

The color I chose—tangerine—was also equal parts muted and bright. I loved how bold it felt as a warm weather style while also feeling a bit soft.

Most importantly, the puff sleeve: This decidedly more feminine feature can easily feel like a bit too much on someone with a shorter frame. The ‘Havana’ version of it felt quieter somehow, designed to add a flourish without overwhelming. You’d think that the tiered skirt, plus the sleeve, plus the V-neck and buttons would compete, but they don’t. This is a dress I’d love to own in multiple colors. (I also love the styling options—with a belt, with a sweater, I could go on.)

Bottom Line

Everyone needs a style that they can rely on to throw on and go. The ‘Havana’ is that for me and I’m so happy to have discovered it. Bonus points? The fact that the ankle-length fit means I can wear it with flats.
