Our love for ankle boots is as eternal as Joanna Gaines’s for shiplap, Carrie Bradshaw’s for Manolos and Kim Kardashian’s for contouring—combined. They’re comfortable, stylish and, at this point, just as much a necessary closet staple as a classic white button-down or little black dress. Here are five new styles you’re bound to see everywhere this fall and how to wear them.

High-Cut and Sleek

The number one style to look out for this year is structured, simple and clean-cut with a longer shaft than the western-style booties we've all been wearing for years. But just like the western ones, reserve these for skirts and dresses or skinny jeans tucked in the ankle. If you want to experiment with a looser jean, though, roll the cuffs up well above the ankle to show off your fab new shoes.

Sock Boots

If you've ever wished you could leave the house in just a pair of super-comfy socks, then this style is the one for you. Stretchy shafts in soft materials give these boots an ankle-hugging, stocking-like effect that's much more feminine than their chunky buckled predecessors. Go full femme with a floaty midi dress or use the boots to add a ladylike touch to a tough jacket and pants.

Embellished Heels

A beaded or sparkly heel looks best when worn with clean, minimalist jeans and a tailored blazer or vest. You know they're meant to be the star of the show, so give them a chance to stand out.

Slouchy Ankles

This relaxed and open style is the perfect mate for leggings, tights or even bare legs. Avoid pairing them with loose pants or you’ll end up looking baggy and shapeless.

Bright White

Note: These are not the go-go boots of yore. Think more structured shapes and edgy details. Wear them exactly as you would plain black booties. (They’re basically interchangeable but add an unexpected pop of fun to your look.)
