Reader, it’s a rare moment when you meet a bag that’s not only perfect for travel, but also something that (stylishly) reduces the back-breaking burden of mom life. At least, that’s how I felt when I met the Nik carry-all from MZ Wallace.

At the time, I wasn’t planning a review—I was simply another parent trying to get a grip on the expansive range of things I needed to carry on a trans-Atlantic—and bucket list—vacation to London, Paris and Copenhagen with an infant and 7-year-old by my side. On past trips, I’d of course tested backpacks or more kid-friendly packing options to help keep my family organized, but for this two-week getaway, I wanted a bag that allowed me to both pare down and have an organized space for every essential. Think passports and pacifiers, but also a good book and an iPad fully loaded with Bluey. (That barely scratches the surface of what I was able to ultimately fit, but it gives you an idea.)

When it came time to finally start loading up this carry-all, I was floored. Not only by the sheer number of compartments—there are 16 in total—but also how light the bag remained no matter how many items I stuffed into it. (It helps that, when empty, it clocks in at just over 2 pounds.) There’s more: The padded handles, the luggage sleeve, even a detachable pouch that clips on the inside (you better believe that’s where I tucked my most critical item—ahem, the pacifiers).

As I carried the Nik onto the plane to Heathrow, then the Chunnel to Paris, then finally, on a short flight to Copenhagen, it stayed pretty and chic—but most importantly, I saved myself countless minutes rustling around in my bag in search of so many miscellaneous—yet must-have—items.

The Specs

The Nik measures 7 inches wide and 12 inches tall with a nearly 17-inch length (yes, it easily accommodates a 13- or 16-inch laptop). It also features an adjustable strap—with an extended length of up to 50 inches—and a handle that has an 11-inch drop.

It’s made from MZ Wallace’s signature material (called REC Oxford Fabrication) and it features an Italian leather trim. But most important of all, it includes nine interior pockets—designed to accommodate everything from a laptop or iPad to sunglasses to your phone—as well as seven exterior pockets, which can handle a water bottle, even an umbrella. Last, but not least, there’s a detachable pouch that clips onto a dedicated clasp on the interior.

The entire bag zips fully closed.

What Makes It Such a Stand-Out

MZ Wallace

As I mentioned, there are a few stand-out details about the Nik that make it such a beloved carry-all tote:

• How light it feels, even fully loaded
• The padded straps
• The sheer number of compartments (16 in total)
• The sanity-saving effect of having a pocket for everything

I’ll start with the bag’s aesthetics. It’s sleek and sophisticated—i.e. I could just as easily carry this on an international trip to Europe with a drooling baby and kid who wants snacks, the iPad, something to do, stat, as I could carry it on a day trip sans my family. I’ll admit that I am the person in my family that keeps track of all the details. I carry the passports, the change of clothes, the various water bottles and, of course, magazines for my own in-flight entertainment. I was blown away that there were enough pockets to dedicate to individual members of my family and found myself reaching for essential items so seamlessly when the need arose. (Passports at security? Those are right here; the iPad while we get ready for take-off? Let me cue that right up.)

As our journey continued, the Nik also became a welcome spot to stash memorable and nice-to-have items—my son’s travel journal that he began taking notes in whenever we had down time, but also ticket stubs and other mementos that I knew I might want to hold onto down the road. It’s a bag that yields an “everything in its place” kind of feeling while simultaneously being the one I voluntarily carried. (“You’ve got the suitcases, right? I’ll get this one and the kids!” I’d say to my spouse.)

It’s true that traveling with kids more often than not leaves parents feeling frazzled. The Nik alleviated that feeling for me, both as I navigating the varying needs and emotions of my own clan, but also in the confidence I projected as I moved throughout my travels. It’s such a nice feeling to know exactly where the phone charger is; ditto my kid’s Instax camera that he loves to tote whenever we take a special trip.

For moms especially, the mental load is so real. The Nik gave me a chance to physically manifest it in a way that left me feeling stylish, but most importantly prepared.
