Who the Heck Is Chanty Beluga? For Starters, She's Not Real

A woman named Chanty Beluga orders a coffee. A woman named Chanty Beluga switches to Verizon. A woman named Chanty Beluga uses a stall with no toilet paper. Such are the antics of this niche comedy phenomenon, in which a woman supposedly bearing the name "Chanty Beluga" goes through life with her name emblazoned on her forehead. There's just one catch: She's not real.

Chanty Beluga is the fabrication of comedian Courtney O'Donnell, who created the character while on a movie set with friends. "I just was like, 'Hi, I'm Chanty,'" O'Donnell told Yahoo!Life. She added "Beluga" to the name, and then began imagining what exactly life would look like for a woman named Chanty Beluga.

This comedic venture isn't O'Donnell's first foray into the genre; she's an established comedian who's been in the business eight years. Chanty Beluga is one of a long string of characters she's tried out, and just happens to have staying power.

What makes Chanty Beluga interesting is that she's not necessarily viral in the traditional sense of the word. She exists on niche pockets of the internet; her TikTok following is under 150,000; on Instagram she's under 50,000. But, as O'Donnell told Yahoo!Life, the niche aspect is what makes it novel.

"I'm glad it didn't just go to a million people at first. The nicheness of it is something that is special, and hopefully that flavor still stays."

While O'Donnell doesn't intend for Chanty Beluga to overtake her personality, for now, she's having fun with it—and so are brands.

"Life comes at you fast," Applebees commented on one recent video. "One day you’re in Ohio. The next you’re Chanty Beluga eating apps at the world’s largest Applebee’s in Times Square."
