Will Taylor Swift Perform at Her Own Wedding? An Investigation

It’s just a matter of weeks (or possibly even days?!) before the wedding of the decade takes place between billionaire Taylor Swift and sports person Travis Kelce. According to reports, the future football wife is set to wed Kelce over July 4th weekend in London Rhode Island New York City (?). That’s about all we “know” for sure, which means the rumor mill is working overtime.

Was Travis’s recent golf trip to the Bahamas really his bachelor party? Did Tay-Tay snub former bestie Blake Lively by not inviting her to the big day? And the question I’m dying to know the answer to: Will Taylor perform at her own wedding? (And if so, will it be a sweet serenade or the biggest cringe moment of the year?) Here, a very serious investigation.

First of all, is it possible for her to sing?

Will her wedding have live music or a DJ? In an episode of his podcast back in September, Kelce revealed that a DJ wasn’t for them. He told guest host Jimmy Fallon, “Yeah, I think we’re live music kind of people, you know?” Innnnteresting, Travis. So, it sounds like there will be the equipment needed for a Taylor tune or two…

And if there’s live music, will there be a stage for Taylor to take?

She says yes. In October, Swift was asked if Ed Sheeran would perform at the wedding and responded, “Oh it would be hard to keep him from it, I think. That’s the thing, he’s like, ‘I’m always being asked to sing at weddings.’ It’s like, 'Ed, if there is a stage, you know you’ll be on it.'” So, there will be a stage and people from the wedding will be welcome to sing on it. Innnnteresting, Taylor.

Is there a precedent here?

If she did sing, she’d be following in the footsteps of many a self-important celebrity before her. John Legend sang “All of Me” to his new bride Chrissy Teigen back in 2013. Paul McCartney belted a brand-new ballad at his 2011 wedding to heiress Nancy Shevell. Ed Sheeran performed at his reception, Michael Bublé sang at his, the list goes on.

But would she dare?

For that answer, I turned to the Swifties themselves who know the singer far better than I do. I quickly found I’m not the only one who has been wondering whether or not Swift plans to show off her vocals at the wedding. In fact, there are entire Reddit threads devoted to the subject, and the fans have thoughts on the matter.

One Swiftie wrote, “Taylor & many of her friends actually love to perform. I could see her singing 1-2 herself or with others, and others choosing to sing some in addition with a live band playing the rest of the night.”

There was disagreement however, with one fan retorting, “I don’t think it will be her own music, she’s not that narcissistic. And I don’t think she’ll perform.” (Respectfully, I wouldn’t call John Legend or Michael Bublé narcissistic for singing to their new brides, but the point is taken nonetheless.)

But perhaps the strongest Reddit argument IMHO had to be from the fan who pointed out, “It would kind of suck to have a wedding and be unable to play TSwift music.” This is true—so why wouldn’t she at least play some of her own songs? And if she’s willing to do that, it really isn’t that huge of a leap to her singing one…

And then there is one important point to remember: Swift is a songwriter first and foremost. Therefore, it wouldn’t be a huge stretch for her to debut a new song at her wedding as a gift or show of her love for Kelce. It would almost be out of character for her not to express her feelings through music.

Dominic Fournier, co-founder of The Wedding Duo told MSN, “Artists like Taylor tend to mark big chapters of their lives with music, and a wedding would be the ultimate chapter. I could absolutely see her debuting a brand-new track during their first dance. Something stripped down, romantic and very storytelling-driven. Probably piano or acoustic guitar, lyrics about timing, fate and how their worlds unexpectedly collided. It would feel intimate, almost like the room is getting a private performance.”

Fans and expert predictions abound, but can we really count those as evidence that she’ll sing?

For true confirmation, I thought it might be best to head directly to Taylor’s own lyrics, which are jam-packed with hints that she’s always been dying to sing at a wedding.

Would “Paper Rings” make a good humble-brag moment amidst a wedding that promises to cost in the multi-millions? Would “Lover” solidify Travis as “this magnetic force of a man” she’s been waiting on? Would she sing one of her recent songs that are overtly about her future husband—“The Fate of Ophelia” or, God-forbid, “Wood”? The final “Lover” lyric is quite literally a wedding vow—could her wedding performance actually come during the ceremony?

If I were a betting man (I’m not), my money would be on Taylor taking the stage. After all, she’s already showy and (lovably) cringe-y, a verbal oversharer who can stand in heeled rhinestone boots for hours while holding a guitar. What’s a five-minute wedding gig to her?

It’s obviously impossible to know for certain what will happen at the nuptials. And it’s even possible that we never find out (!). Those lucky wedding guests will get to “hold on to the memories”—let’s just hope they ignore their NDAs and tell the rest of us all about them.
