I Have a Wild Theory About the White Lotus Killer & Victim (And It’s Been Right in Front of Us All Along)

Only two episodes to go, folks

the white lotus season 3 three theory UNI
HBO Max

For some the murder mystery aspect of The White Lotus is simply the cherry on top of the cake that is a microcosmic inspection of class divides. But I would have to disagree. I have spent every single week of season three overanalyzing who I think is most likely to wind up dead and floating in the resort’s numerous ponds, who shot those guns in the opening scene and who, if anyone, will be revealed to be a killer. And where has all that finagling landed me? On a theory that feels both incredibly simple and incredibly fun—that season three will end with three victims and three killers.

Psst: Spoilers ahead.

Since the opening scenes of The White Lotus season three we, the audience, have been practically hit over the head with trios. There’s the three Ratliff siblings, ever so conveniently positioned to mimic the three wise monkeys (see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil) the first time we meet them. There’s the three blonde 40-somethings, who keep splintering into groups of two leaving the third a victim of her friends’ cruel observations. There’s the three Russian party boys, who may very well also be the violent hotel robbers. After experiencing two brushes with death (the store robbery and a snake bite) Chelsea actually says to Rick, “bad luck comes in threes,” and has continually brought up her feeling that “something bad is going to happen.”

Even if you discount the meta “clue” that this is the third season, there’s really no doubt that the biggest continuous theme of season three is literally the number three. So it would make a whole lot of sense to continue that theme with three deaths each perpetrated by a different killer.

As for who the three victims and three killers might be, on that I am less sure. But that won’t stop me from continuing to guess!

Belinda’s been urging Fabian to call the police to arrest Greg/Gary for the murder of Tonya, but what if her drive for justice ends up taking another route? Rather than Greg/Gary killing Belinda, I think there’s a high likelihood she kills him, though it would probably take all of us, including Belinda herself, by surprise.

gaitok talks to mook white lotus season 3

There’s been a lot of talk about whether or not Gaitok has what it takes to join Sritala Hollinger’s team of bodyguards, but there’s really only one way to prove you have the hutzpah needed to fire a gun when others are in danger. Will Gaitok’s shot prove him a hero by taking down a villain? Or will he wind up unintentionally taking the life of someone much less deserving? Look, I don’t want Gaitok to be a killer, but he is one of the only characters currently in possession of a deadly firearm.

chelsea talks with rick white lotus season 3
HBO Max

I am also deeply afraid for both Chelsea and Rick. She’s spent the entire season begging Rick to let her help him—could that “help” come by way of literally giving up her life to save his? (Also fulfilling her prediction that “death is coming for me. This could be some Final Destination-type shit.”) Or will Rick finally find peace in giving his life to save Chelsea’s?

As for who would target either one of these poor souls, this one feels most likely to be a tragic accident. Maybe it will be Sritala Hollinger’s bodyguards, maybe it’ll be a monkey with a gun. Whatever the case, these two are giving major star-crossed lovers vibes, and not in a happy way.

Lastly, I simply cannot ignore Chekhov’s gun poisonous fruit. Mentioned off-handedly by Pam in episode one and then never revisited, there’s a zero percent chance this does not come back up before the season ends. Maybe Gary/Greg will try to get Belinda to eat some at his bizarre and frankly terrifying dinner party set to take place next episode, but I think the more likely scenario is one much more darkly humorous.

Who was it that asked about the fruit in the first place? Saxon. And who is currently having a deep identity crisis that is bound to only get worse when he learns that his idol, Timothy, is responsible for him losing his job, aka the one thing that has given his life purpose? Saxon. And who is currently in possession of all the fixins to make a fruit smoothie potent enough to bring these crises—and his life—to an end?

You have to admit, there’s something operatic about having the third killer and victim be one and the same...
