It’s safe to say that being catfished sounds like a true nightmare.

Despite the many horror stories out there, you never really believe it's something that can happen to you. This true-crime documentary—which just hit number one on Netflix—tells the story of a teenage couple, Lauryn Licari and Owen McKenny, who were cyberbullied for nearly two years by an unidentified culprit. The bullying started with a random group text sent to both Licari and McKenny from an unknown number, with the claim that McKenny was cheating on Licari. Within a year, the couple was receiving up to 40-to-50 messages a day.

Now, I know what you’re thinking—why didn’t they block the number? Here’s the catch—they were unable to block because the sender was using an app that kept regenerating new phone numbers. After two years of daily harassment, the FBI finally stepped in, and…well, I won’t spoil it for you. The documentary comes from award-winning director Skye Borgman, whose previous credits include American Murder: Laci Peterson, Unsolved Mysteries and more.

And while there currently isn’t a rating for it yet on Rotten Tomatoes, the comments on the YouTube trailer indicate there is a major plot twist ahead. “When they revealed who did it, my mind literally stopped working. They were continuing with the rest of the story, and my brain just went blank from shock, where I had to rewind and concentrate again,” writes one commenter. “I've just watched the documentary. This is mind-blowing. The girl is severely traumatized. I don't think she's processed what's happened.” Consider me sold, I will definitely be adding to my weekend watch list.

You can stream Unknown Number: The High School Catfish on Netflix.
