I Watched 'The Thursday Murder Club'—And Here’s the One Thing That Bothered Me

Still definitely worth the watch, though

When it comes to picking a movie to watch, there are a few things that instantly get me on board: a stacked ensemble cast, a story with multiple compelling plot lines and a little mystery? Consider me sold. That’s why Netflix’s The Thursday Murder Club immediately caught my eye. It was giving serious Knives Out vibes (which I love), so needless to say, hitting play was a no-brainer.

The Thursday Murder Club is a crime comedy based on Richard Osman’s 2020 novel of the same name. The cast is seriously impressive with Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie leading the charge and an equally strong supporting lineup including Naomi Ackie, Tom Ellis and Sarah Niles.

The plot centers around a group of friends living in a retirement home who solve cold cases for fun, until they find themselves caught up in a very real murder mystery. And conveniently, each of them has a professional past that makes them surprisingly well-equipped to investigate: Mirren’s character was a spy, Imrie’s a nurse, Brosnan’s a trade union official and Kingsley’s a psychiatrist.

For a two-hour movie, the time flew by. It didn’t drag and, honestly, there wasn’t much I’d consider unnecessary. The film kicks off fast, jumping right into the first murder investigation, so if you watch, be ready to pay attention from the jump.

As for the acting? Everyone nailed it. Mirren as an ex-spy was, unsurprisingly, perfect. At this point, she could probably solve a real-life case, given how many times she’s played roles like this.

The film does a great job keeping you guessing. I didn’t land on the right suspect for the main murder until about three-quarters of the way through. That said, here’s the one thing that bothered me a bit: While the main murder was wrapped up in a neat little bow for viewers, the other murder reveals didn’t hit quite as hard. The motives and resolutions fell a little flat, in comparison. It seemed like there was a slight rush to make sure to address what happened to the other characters who faced untimely deaths.

Still, it wasn’t enough to take away from how much I enjoyed it. I’d absolutely recommend it, especially for a family movie night. A cozy murder mystery with comedic relief and a little eye candy (aka Ellis)? Yes, please.
